here is a link to a site they do field test on it http://www.backpackgeartest.org/

sounds like they have some issues getting satalite reception. all 3 testers , for the most part, couldn't get reception where they went. on top of that they didn't know they didn't send there message until they made it home.. so i'm kinda backing out of it a little for now?????

I don't have any experience with this product but I believe it was originally developed for mariners. Easy to get 3 or more satellites on the open ocean. I know I've had some problems with my GPS getting a signal when in the mountains at times and that is why I've never really looked into this. For someone going into the wilderness by themselves now and then I really don't think its a bad investment. Unless you can't crawl to the top of a ridge or an open valley you shouldn't have too much problem getting a signal. Of course, in bad weather, I don't know how reliable it would be. Guess it kind of depends on how resourceful an individual is at getting themselves out of a tough spot far from help. Personal call I'd say.

1 of the testers was in arizona with very open skyes and said that he/ she only had 1 of her messages
go through, and it is supposed to send them every 10 min. my GPS picks up satilites in almost anything[ accually i've never had it not pick up signal, sometimes it takes a little longer] but with out knowing for sure if your message has went through is the difference between trying anything you can to get out or the smartest way to stay put and let them find you.untill there are better reviewes i think i would rather put it in my own hands to get myself out then sit there and hope my message went through :-k

I gotta agree with you there. To me, the old tried and true method of letting other know where you'll be and when you plan to be back still works pretty dang good. Cell phones can help locate you, providing you can get a signal. I can never get a signal in the mountains with mine so I never carry it. I do let others know where I'm heading and about when I should be back. At the very least that narrows down the search area if something were to happen.
