Salting...

I have a few friends that hunt in Oregon and use Salt. They spread rock salt all over the hills that they hunt. Is this legal? If it is, in your opinion...is it something you would do? Seems wrong for some reason...

Well since salt kills most all plant life, they are stupid for doing it. And yes, i'm almost positive it is illegal. You should turn them in to the game and fish. Hope i never bump into them.

In AZ it is legal. It is the same as a salt lick for cattle. You need to check your states regs to see if it is legal. You can put it off to the side of a well used trail and it is a great place to set up on. You would want to start putting it out at least a couple months prior to the season and go back and restock it every so often depending on how hard they are hitting it. I don't think you meant that they are actually spreading it all over the mt. do you? Good luck.

I have friends who have used salt licks many times and it works great. Not only do the deer use it but also little rodents and other wildlife benefits from it as well. I don't anyone would just "dump" salt all over the mountain, that would require too much dedication and lack of common sense.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE LEGALITY OF SALT LICKS, BUT I HAVE RAN INTO SOME WHILE OUT IN THE WOODS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT "BAITING" WAS ILLEGAL. BUT YOU CAN TURN ON THE OUTDOOR CHANNEL ANY TIME AND THERE SEEMS TO BE A SHOW BASED AROUND HUNTING OVER ENTIRE FEILDS SET UP ONLY TO ATTRACT AND HOLD DEER. IF THAT IS NOT BAITING, I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE DEFINITION WOULD BE. I GUESS DIFFERENT LAWS, AND WORSE YET, DIFFERENT INTURPRETATIONS OF THOSE LAWS EXIST FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL STATE. FOR ME, I COULD NOT IMAGINE SITTING OVER A SALT LICK IN HOPES OF SOMETHING WALKING IN. IT'S EITHER MOBILE AND ON THE MOVE, OR SIX FEET UNDER. NOTHING GETS THE BLOOD PUMPING LIKE A BEDDED MULEY THROUGH THE GLASSES, OR A RUTTING ELK WITH HIS COWS RUNNING ACROSS A HIGH MEADOW FROM A RIDGE SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS AWAY. THEN YA GOTTA GO GET'M. IN LIES THE "HUNT" PART OF THE EXPERIENCE, NOT THE "SIT AND WAIT".
