Scope vs Open

What are your opinions on hunting with a scope vs hunting just open sights on your muzzy

I have always done open sights, but leaning toward a scope this year myself. Just don't buy a piece of junk scope if you do it IMO.

Most 1x scopes are so small (20-30mm) that the light gathering capability is minimal to brighten an image at dawn or dusk, although a little is possible. Cross-hairs is about all I can figure. When you're considering holdover on longer shots the open sights can cover up the target, not so with the scope... but I figure if I have to hold that high it's likely outside of my range & I try to get closer.

the areas i hunt often see 150-200 yard shots so i use a red dot scope and have set at 200 yards. The last buck i killed was at 205 and hit him right where i aimed. don't know if i could have done that with open sights with a muzzy.

I use a peep sight and have been really happy with it. I am more consistent with it and don't have problems with the sight covering up my target.

In my own professional opinion i would never use a scope on a muzzleloader. Where i live you cant have any magnification on the scope so it almost makes it seem farther away and in low light conditions it isnt as good as a TC with true glow sights. plus you can spend that money elsewhere in havesting the trophy of a liftime.

Iron sights if you still have good eyesight. If your eyesight is bad. It's time for a scope. Better for you and the animal.

I have one muzzy with iron sights I use for true premitive weapon hunts. Lose powder, wade, and a 200grn ball. 100yrds deadly. Also a thompson with a true glo peep. 150grns pwder 240grn powerbelt deadly to 150yrds. And a pursuit II XI7 with a nikon omega, 150grns powder 300grn powerbelt deadly in my hands to 300yrds. What ever you get use the crap out of it until you know what its limitations are. Also know what exactly is legal where you hunt is. Good luck.

I went with a Traditions 1x scope so I wouldn't run into that problem..I'm sure that would happen to me!

I used a 1x scope when I got my CVA Apex, since it's built for a scope. Never did like it. Thought about buying an EoTech, but changed my mind. I went out on a limb and bought a Peep sight. Talk about accurate. I thought I was making a 200 yard shot on my Elk, but it ended up being 280 yards. Drilled him hard. I was flabbergasted when I ranged it afterwards. I know, it kind of defeats the purpose of having a rangefinder. My window of opportunity didn't give me time. Anyway, I'll be using my Peep from now on. I'm sure you'd like it.
