Nice finds, sounds like a great time. Chuckars are fun to hunt, but can be very frustrating. :thumb

Yea chukars are a blast to hunt as long as you don't mind wheezing the whole way up the steepest mountain youve ever seen just to get to the top and frantically blast away at em as they glide lazilly to the next ridge cackeling at you the whole way!

Chukars are my favorite game bird to eat. They have a sweet taste, but as has been mentioned can be a very frustrating bird to hunt.

That's a good days haul there Nonya. I'm planning a 4 day shed hunting adventure out in MT in a couple weeks. Hope to get a mixed bag of WT, MD, and Elk.

That's interesting that You spotted Chukars up your way. During the Fall of 06 I came across a good size flock, about 25 or so way up next to the Canadian border in central MT. I was Muley hunting in some rough badlands.

I sent the pics to the F&G bio,...
Cole,

These are Chukar partridge. They are a common non-native game bird in the Great Basin States (NV, ID, UT). We have some smaller populations in south central Montana. I would guess these were released by a local landowner or a dog trainer. It is actually illegal to make these kinds of releases but it does happen periodically. As long as we have mild winters, they will likely continue to reproduce.

Thanks for the email. Will be interesting to see what becomes of them.

Rick
