Shaping Up

Anybody doing anything to get physically prepared for upcoming hunts?

I walk year around, on the 1st of August I add a couple miles. I walk fields, hills and trails taking the dogs always.

My father and I both have been working out in the gym 3-4 times a week and trying to do at least 30 minutes of cardio each day. Cameron Hanes' Backcountry Bowhunting gives me a lot of motivation! If you don't have a copy of it, I'd highly recommend picking one up! Great book.

I've been putting on a 60lb vest every day and walking around in 110-120 degree weather every day. Does that count as working out for next year's hunt?

I put on my hunting boots, fill my hunting backpack with about 25 pounds of gear and run for 3 miles.

The elevation here is 1440 ft. It's the altitude change that's the hardest.
I have hunted 10-12 thousand feet and it takes several; days to acclimate.
Now days my hunting is 4-6 thousand feet not to bad. Except for packing out. :-k
Getting in shape for walking long distances for me is a must.

Doing good, bb92. Yes, the vests really weigh that much. Then add on a bit more for all the stuff you have attached. Just glad I'm not packing 7 magazines full of 5.56. I get off easy with 4 mags of 9mm, two on the vest on two on my belt. Oh, don't forget the helmet!

Go to football practice for three weeks before the hunt plus all the lifting and extra stuff over the summer. I'm pretty much in shape.

ABert, man when you get home and hunting, it's going to be a walk in the park for you. Your going to be running out of the mountains with a full pack of meat. :thumb I hope all is well with you, and thanks so much.

JBird,IT was a while back, but I remember football and how easy it was to hike the mountains all day. But also some times there were torn muscles, bruises, sprains, Jeez :-k I don't envy you at all.

The other night I threw my 35 lb 18 month old son in the child pack and went out jack-rabbit hunting. Shot a few, but walking up and down the canyons with that weight is great practice for the hunting season. Gonna have to take him out again I think!
