Shed Ethics course.

The ethics course is now on the DWR web site. It didnt take too long, and was quite easy if you read the info for each question. We all have to take it might as well get it over with, and hopefully learn somthing while we are at it.

Thanks for the link. That made things easy. I'm confused. I got one of the questions wrong and had to go back to answer again. The question asked "Completion of this course is required to gather antlers still attached to a skull plate between February 1st and April 15th."

I responded with False because course or no course antlers still attached to a skull plate must stay where they are unless you call the fish and game and after an investigation they determine that it was a natural death and then give you permission to pick up the skull/antlers.

I got the question wrong. When I went back through and answered true I passed the course. I think the answer to the question is incorrect. Finding skulls with antlers is not shed hunting. What do you all think?

Very true same with me. It sounds like they are contridicting the law to be inforced. :-k So what is right and what is wrong?

It's been corrected on the course, you can NOT pick up skulls or antlers attached to a skull in Utah.
Sorry for the mistake....spread the word with those who think the law has changed!!

I just finished the test and I to was confused with the OOPS on sheds still attached to the skull plate... lol
Then I felt like I was buying a firearm with all the information needed. Kind of strange, because the ethics course for the extended archery dose not ask these type of questions? But we got-r-done :thumb

I tried to take it, but get a bunch of errors. Looks like the system is down temporarily?

I was able to take it yesterday, and did well on it.. Even if you get any of the questions wrong you can retake them as many times as you want until you get a 100% which you have to get to get your certificate.

I couldn't wait to see what Utah on-line course included....Not nearly as informative as it was amusing.... I hope that the message of what real damage to the herds and enviroment has been instilled in some....Pictures are worth a thousand words, especially when it shows the consequences of wrong doing, ...but in this case it seems that reading comprehension was the real test ...IMHO trick or misleading questions probably won't help get the message across....But I am still amazed that a vehicle cannot kill an animal in Utah during the winter....maybe there just isn't any accidents....

Good luck shed hunting,
Randy

Shedding (no pun intended) a little more light on the subject....It appears to me that a lot more space than needed was used on each web page to print the thought provoking (trick) questions....My dial up service sure took its time displaying each page...The background picture, although very nice, took its time to display each page....and it was always the same....

After teaching countless hunter education courses to our young hunters and even a few classes to seasoned adults, I learned that visuals make longer lasting impressions than words....In this case I believe the producers assigned to this task were inexperienced and their obvious mistakes will help them better prepare an online course in the future.....It may be that designers of this course were fresh out of college and their idea of test questions was to present them in a manner that would almost surely guarantee some incorrect answers....This type of test will eventually come back and bite the teacher....For instance: Antler gathering is not controlled between April 16th and Jan 31 of the following year....Their answer true...Does this mean you can gather skull plated antlers during that time?.....

My suggetions would for them would be to use less space for text, print different and meaning photos on each page, such as winter kills, winter sick animals, OHV damage, and related material.....Print more fact and most of all stress the importance and reasoning behind the shed hunting course....Ask straight questions that can be answered with matter of fact....They should remember this is not test of grammar, but an informative presentation that hopefully will give us insight into a sensitive situation and in the end make us better stewards of the land.

All IMHO,
Randy

Well said I couldn't agree more. I too was disappointed. I took the course hoping to learn more than I did. I'm new to shed hunting and wanted to learn more about it. Instead I felt like the course was designed in a way to provide the fish and game cops with ammunition for those that violate lesser known laws such as riding your ATV on a road that is not posted as an ATV trail. I think the idea behind requiring the course is a good one. I would like to see less shed hunter caused stress on the herds but IMO the course would be better with photos and less trick questions.

Thanks for your great inputs guys, this is exactly what we the committe needed to see and hear, i will be sure to bring these ideas and issues up when the committee meets again for next year's draft.
I totally agree they should have put pictures 10sign: (i'll get them on there for next year)
Thanks for all your support!! =D>

Hello skull crazy,
I hope you didn't take an offense to what I wrote...I re-read it and thought that parts of it could have been taken as a little harsh...I am sorry if I came across that way and I had no intentions of offending anyone if I did...
I guess I remember from earlier posts that you were part of the committee....I commend you for being involved....I wish more hunters would input their ideas back to their respective Fish, Game, Wildlife departments...
Thanks,
Randy

I just took the course last night and was thrown off by question #2.
The question is:
Which condition(s) have no affect on deer survival during winter months?
Hunter disturbance
None of these
Cold temperatures
Snow depth
Vehicle accidents

In my mind it should be all of these, but the answer is Vehicle Accidents. I dont know about you but every time I have hit a deer with a vehicle it has had an affect on that deers survival. Anyone who has driven between Strawberry reservoir and Vernal, or any other winter range for that matter, during the winter months knows how much of an impact vehicles have on deer. Maybe they are just talking about vehicle vs vehicle accidents........... Maybe the DWR is thinking they are being tricky.........

Anyways i went back and finished it. Hopefully I can get out and find some sheds this year.

And then after all the info I have to submit I feel I should have at least gotten a phone number or something out of it..... My wife wouldnt have liked that, but you get the point....

Glad i wasn't the only one that got stumped on that one, i see more road kills during winter monts that all other seasons combined!
But after redoing it, i got my cert =D>

My take on that one was: Hunter disturbance, snow depth, cold temperatures are all variable "conditions" affecting winter survival....but vehicle accidents are not a "condition" but rather an "event".....Whatever the author had in mind makes you think he was trying to trick somebody....It took me several tries too...I couldn't imagine that there was no hunting seasons in Utah during winter months, but that was my first guess.....Oh well
