South Dakota pheasant population booming

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - State wildlife officials say that when hunters take to the fields next month, they'll find 1 of the largest pheasant populations in South Dakota history.

The annual brood count survey, conducted by counting pheasants on 110 routes across the pheasant range, found statewide numbers that are 23% higher than last year's counts.

Doug Hansen, wildlife director for the Game, Fish and Parks Department, says South Dakota has not had such a large pheasant population since the early 1960s.

Brood surveys show the population is up in nearly all areas -- with the biggest increases in central South Dakota.

The main pheasant season starts October 20th, with a statewide youth season October 6th through the 8th and a resident-only season on public lands October 13th through the 16th.
