South Slope Uinta Elk

Looking for a little direction for the archery elk season this year. I've been hunting the West end of the Uintas for a few years and have come up with nothing, saw 2 elk in 2 seasons. I used to backpack a lot along the south slope and I was thinking of heading that way. Anyone hunt the south slope and willing to give up some advice? As usual, this post is a last ditch effort to find another place to hunt so I'll take what ever info I can get. If you want to give me the location of your secret spot I will of course gladly accept. Thanks!

I think Ive read on here that much of the south slope is private owned. I have seen a herds up by moon lake (Mostly cow & calves). Have you tried to scout any area's out up there?

I was looking at the Moon Lake area. Been a few years but I have camped in a few different areas up there. I know there is some private land and some tribal land but still lots of Natioanl Forest. No, I haven't been able to get out to scout and that is my fault, all the usual excuses, work, family, ect. Thanks for the reply.

I used to have a sweet spot up on the South Slope, but i'll have to think real hard about where exactly it was (it's been a few years). Never hunted it in the archery, but always did well later in the rifle season.

Lunker, where did you hunt on the west side? There are a few good areas I know of there but there are definitely a lot of people too

Redcloud loop is a good area, the roads get alot of pressure. Get a mile away from the road and you will find elk.

We hunted the Hoyt Peak area for the last 2 seasons. We would hike in the week after the road closed. The first year I actually lucked in on a spke and a 3x3 at about 60yds but never got a shot. I think thats why I was suckered into going back last year and saw absolutly nothing eventhough I covered some serious ground(Some good size bucks though). Funny thing was, somone opened the gate and drove their truck up the closed road the last day we were there. Bunch of crap.

I'm in the same boat, I have done the muzzleloader spike hunt around the Fish Lake area over the years but have never ventured into the Any Bull areas. I drew a LE archery deer tag last year so am done with deer for a few more years. Decided to get an archery elk tag and am thinking about going up around the Kamis-Hoyt Peak area but am not opposed to going into the south slope...any help? Not asking for hand outs or honey holes just a few suggestions or good areas. Any help is appreciated.

I grew up in Altamont, and hunted that area growing up, and now live in southern utah, and have returned the last several years. It has not been the same the last several years, compared to what it use to be. I have talked to people, and friends up there I know, and they all say the Tribe has a lot to do with the elk situation up there! My brother-in-law and I hiked back in the high uintah's during last year's archery hunt to see if we could find some backcountry bulls. In a weeks hunt we ran into a total of three elk! Needless to say I will just go back to hunting the spike units! I have hunted up by Flaming Gorge and had some pretty good success!

Too bad the Deer tag is not the one you drew, I saw a nice lookin buck up there 2 weekends ago when I was camped on the east fork of the Bear River on a fishing/camp trip. There were Moose up there we saw too. Its a nice area up there though will all the Quaking Aspen's and cooler weather for the Elk, not sure how many others on here will be hunting but I have seen someone else respond to a post very similar to this one. Wish I had some good info to offer but scouting will probably be your best bet if you dont get a response. That and the season OPENs in 5 days from now.

Hey JW383, from experience I can tell you that the Hoyt Peak area is tough for elk. In two seasons we saw two elk. Funny thing is, I was up there for the rifle deer season a few years ago and there were elk everywhere, all cows. Maybe a bull or two. I would try somewhere else for archery elk. There were some nice deer up there last year though and the [i]closed [i] road makes for easy backpacking.
