Southern Utah hunting?

Hows the Dixie National Forest for big bucks? Is there any there? any suggestions? is it crowded? Should I plan to hike far away from roads?

Thanks

Dixie National Forest is huge, several mountain ranges! Try to be more specific. Maybe even what mountain.

Hike your tail off and you don't have to worry about people otherwise most places I hunt have a decent amount of folks, hunting or otherwise.

Yeah you can't go to far in any direction without having a few campers right by your side. There's a lot of area but generally packed where their are the most deer but you never know you might just get lucky and find you a sweet spot.

By your description, your talking about where highway 14 meets 89 and west from there along highway 14. It can be good during the archery or muzzy hunts but be careful. There's ALOT of private property mixed in with forest lands in that area. If your hunting the rifle hunt, most the deer move south near the Arizona border or north towards Panguich by then. Hope that helps a little.

Both areas can be good and hold good bucks. Ridgetop's info is dead on.

thanks for the help. I ordered a bunch of maps and the BLM maps don't show much private in there. I will have to pay attention to where I am at.

The area you are talking about hunting has some great bucks in it. It will be a pretty difficult hunt if you are going for a mature buck. But if you practice your stalking tactics and remain patient it will pay off... Just keep your eyes open and scanning constantly. Ive hunted that area before and deer I did not see at first busted me. If I would have seen them first Im sure I could have harvested a few of them.. Let me know if you have any other questions about that area. Liek the others said there is alot of private land in there. So bring a detailed map and a gps and you should be fine.

I guess my other questions would be...how is the cell phone service out there and are there better maps other than the BLM maps?? Thanks for all the help.

Cell service is hit and miss out there.. If you are at the top of the peaks you will probably get it. if you are down in the canyons you probably wont. Also your cell phone carrier will mean alot. From what ive seen Verizon and Alltell (Verizon did not buy out Alltell in this part of the country) get the best reception in the remote areas. If you have sprint, att or t-mobile it may be a little tougher and I would proably say you wont have service, but could possibly roam on other companies towers.

I would possibly check out getting an amplifier and antenna from Wilson Electronics for your cell phone and you would be able to get service from your vehicle. I own one and absolutely love it. I just got a black berry so I have to buy a new system. So depending on your service provider and phone I have one I would sell you for way cheap.

As far as maps I think the BLM maps are the best.. Also before you go check out the area on google earth. it helps me to see everything in 3D.. I dont know if anyone else has more input on better maps.. I tend to do alot of research before I go out, then basically dont look at a map much once im out becase I have most of it memorized in my head.. But do take my gps with maps loaded.

Any other questions I m sure we can all answer.
