For years we fished at Lake Powell, on the Utah side for Walleye and Strippers. We found many many Walleye at the back of the Dirty Devil River. Really at that point it was just a muddy creek, but they liked it. Also it was funny, but in the Spring the walleye would be out in the channels in fairly deep water for them. The water was very clear out their, you could see them in about 35' to 40' of water. Lots of fun. This photo is a blown up copy of my wallet photo, I can't find the original, that's why the quality if poor. they were the best eat'n fish on the lake

There are a number of warm water lakes, most in the Southern part of the State that have walleye. I think that one or two of the lakes in the Eastern part of the state have them also, but Powell is the only place in the state that I've "regularly" caught them.

It was kind of funny, my boat is to big to fish out of like a Bass boat, my only alternative is to "troll" for Bass, Crappie and Walleye. Sounds stupid, but it works, at least at Powell. The cliffs are vertical and several hundred feet high, both above and below the surface of the water. Since the fish love structure, they love the first 3 feet from the wall of the cliff, outward. If you can "Troll", slow enough and close enough to the wall you can catch bucket loads of fish. I used to keep one person on the bow with a long poll to keep us off the cliff up front.

I used to pull into the cleaning station and have the owners of the fast bass boats come over and ask, after I dumped several garbage bags of fish out, how we did it? After I told them, they called me a few names and said that if I didn't want to tell them they could show me the dock, and the water beyond. They would not believe me. I quit telling them.. or I told them Buzzard Balls and Yellow FlatFish, Down Near the Dam. Fun Spring days.........

bigbuck92 -- I forget, what's the name of the lake out past Steinaker, anyway, I believe that their are walleye in that State Park, I remember now, it's "Red Fleet" and one of the best lakes in the state for walleye is just the SLC side of Duchesne, you know, the big bridge you cross, "Starvation". I think the state record came from their. Something around 7lbs I think. It may be more than that. There might even be some in, now I forget it's name, the little lake on the way to the Bookcliff, it's this side of Oaray, between Myton and Randelett, it's known for it Crappie fishing. Oh, anyway, there are a few for you to try. There are many people out their that fish for them, I'm sure you can get some leads....

state record is only 7lbs?We dont consider them big till they hit 10lbs.They get pretty big here the F&G netted one that was 21 lbs 2 years ago, tagged and relesed, hes probably a world record by now, thats ony 23 lbs.

I told you I wasn't certain. I looked it up and the record is 15lbs 9oz caught out of the Provo River. Striped Bass was 48lbs 11oz on Lake Powell, Lake Trout 51lbs 8oz on Flaming Gorge and Large Mouth 10lbs 2oz.

By the way Lake Powell is 180 miles long, has 1960 miles of shoreline and is about 570ft deep at high water, it also has 160,000 surface acres. I used to cruise it from one end to the other, from the San Jaun to the Escalante, I'm not able to any more, I miss it more than anything in my life.....

ill have to try redfleet for them one of these days. do you think there better tasting then blue gill? ive never tasted anything as good as those

I honestly don't know, the little bluegill are good and I use to love the dinner plate sized crappie at Lake Powell, I don't remember the record their but we caught 2 1/2 to 3lb crappie with great regularity when the Crappie were in there hay day at Lake Powell. We didn't even bother driving the boat back to Bullfrog to have them weighed, we were having to much fun. With no limit we would catch 3,4,500 per trip, fillet them out and put them in the coolers to keep them fresh, then go back for more. The fillets would be the size of you outstretched hand and just as white and flaky meat as your little bluegill.

Walleye are just a little darker, not much, with the same wonderful flavor, much bigger fillets. Cut into chunks, battered and deep fried, you can't beat a "Walleye Fry". I remember, in the oil fields near Evanston, inviting all the "Company Men" from the drilling rigs into our shop and having 500lbs of chunk fresh walleye flown in. We also had a couple of hundred pounds of crawdads (crayfish) boiled in shrimp spices, all boiled with potatoes and corn. You will never in your life have a better feed.

I've made myself very hungry, I think I'll head out and get the boat ready to head down..... later

Walleyes are real tasty. Take it from me, I live in the middle of the 10,000 lakes area. These are the best eating fish anywhere. :thumb

That's a great looking mess of fish, what species are they? They do look alot like a strain of crappie. They look like "Perch" of some kind?

We call them Bluegill. They are a hybrid, all crossed up.

In Winter we use wax worms, nothing but a maggot :huh In open water we use small night crawlers.

I fish Walleyes mostly with night crawlers or leaches. With a slip sinker, three foot leader # 8 hook. Trolling slow so the bait is near the bottom.

They look like bluegill, I was just hoping that you wern't calling them "walleye". How big do they get. The one's we get around here for the most part are about 1/2lb. at most. however the crappie down at Lake Powell (in their hay-day) ran 2 - 3lbs., nowdays they run about 1 to 1 1/2lbs.. Their also harder to find, in the spring (now) when they spawn, they bunch up and are easy fare for a jig, your right-on about catching them in the winter months.

I had a friend of mine bring me some Lake Erie Walleye last summer. I put the fillets in beer batter and fried them in oil. It was the first time my kids ever had Walleye and they loved them. A couple months before that he gave me some perch. He makes a trip back to Lake Erie every summer and invited me to tag along on the next one. I might have to take him up on that one.
