The eye season is closed now for spawning, opens May 12. =D>
It was kind of funny, my boat is to big to fish out of like a Bass boat, my only alternative is to "troll" for Bass, Crappie and Walleye. Sounds stupid, but it works, at least at Powell. The cliffs are vertical and several hundred feet high, both above and below the surface of the water. Since the fish love structure, they love the first 3 feet from the wall of the cliff, outward. If you can "Troll", slow enough and close enough to the wall you can catch bucket loads of fish. I used to keep one person on the bow with a long poll to keep us off the cliff up front.
I used to pull into the cleaning station and have the owners of the fast bass boats come over and ask, after I dumped several garbage bags of fish out, how we did it? After I told them, they called me a few names and said that if I didn't want to tell them they could show me the dock, and the water beyond. They would not believe me. I quit telling them.. or I told them Buzzard Balls and Yellow FlatFish, Down Near the Dam. Fun Spring days.........
By the way Lake Powell is 180 miles long, has 1960 miles of shoreline and is about 570ft deep at high water, it also has 160,000 surface acres. I used to cruise it from one end to the other, from the San Jaun to the Escalante, I'm not able to any more, I miss it more than anything in my life.....
Walleye are just a little darker, not much, with the same wonderful flavor, much bigger fillets. Cut into chunks, battered and deep fried, you can't beat a "Walleye Fry". I remember, in the oil fields near Evanston, inviting all the "Company Men" from the drilling rigs into our shop and having 500lbs of chunk fresh walleye flown in. We also had a couple of hundred pounds of crawdads (crayfish) boiled in shrimp spices, all boiled with potatoes and corn. You will never in your life have a better feed.
I've made myself very hungry, I think I'll head out and get the boat ready to head down..... later
In Winter we use wax worms, nothing but a maggot :huh In open water we use small night crawlers.
I fish Walleyes mostly with night crawlers or leaches. With a slip sinker, three foot leader # 8 hook. Trolling slow so the bait is near the bottom.
