ouch! I was at a match once and an op rod came off a garand from a maxed out load and took a guys eye out. He still shoots he switched to a lefty. Got to be careful out there.

Wow, that would make for a bad day. I didn't know what a squib load was for sure until today (thanks google). I knew this type of thing happened in muzzle loader type firearms, but what would cause this in a centerfire rifle, and how can it be avoided?

No powder or low powder charge. I have had a few. You will have little to no recoil. Check to make sure u ckeck your barrel to make sure it clear. Factory loads do it to.

Wow, good to know. I guess I had never even thought it was possible in a centerfire type firearm, so I didn't even worry about it.
