StickFlicker's Holiday Javelina Hunt...

If you saw my post of javelina trail cam photos in the trail cam forum, this is the follow-up to when I went to retrieve the memory card.

I had scouted for javelina about a week before January 1, the opening day of the bow season here in AZ. I found a place where the javelina had worn a good trail going through a thick brushy area, but hadn't actually seen the pigs. I placed a trail camera there, in an open grassy area so that I could try to figure out when they were traveling through the area, and to see if there were any big ones. Unfortunately the date and time were set wrong...so...that was of little use (although I guess I could try to calculate it). Anyway, on opening day of the season I went back to collect the memory card. I set down my bow and digital camera and walked across the small opening to retrieve the memory card. When I bent over to get the camera and took out the card, my backpack was hitting the brush, so I took it off and set it down a few yards away. I walked back across the opening to exchange the memory card with the one in my digital camera, since they take the same card. I heard a noise and turned around to see the javelina coming into the clearing, right by where I had set down my pack! I knocked an arrow, but realized my release was in my pack! They were less than 15 yards, but I thought it would be cool to photograph them standing near my pack, which I did. Eventually, they fed away from it and I crawled over and retrieved my release. By then, however, I was having so much fun photographing them, I decided to just set my bow down and just continue to photograph them. They sometimes fed within about 3-4 yards of me, and my bow lying on the ground. I took this photo to show how close they were to my bow and pack (and myself). I thought it was kind of cool. My girlfriend is a rifle hunter, but has never been bowhunting until I've just recently began taking her. I really wanted her to share in my javelina kill this year, and unfortunately she wasn't with me. So, I just decided not to take one that day with the hope that I will get more opportunities later in the season when she is with me... I hope that doesn't cost me!! Marvin :-k

Nice collared peccary =D> there stickflicker! yeah, that's pretty close, close enough you could have javelined that javelina without the bow! Best of luck to ya when the girlfriend comes along.

I shot my javelina two years ago at 12 yards, last year's was 8 yards, so I figure I need to keep it under 4 yards this year! I was giving a little thought to a chloroform rag and a knife, lol. My record for stillhunting a desert mule deer is one buck I shot at approximately 1-2 yards (not a blind or tree stand). :arrow

I'll let you know how it goes later this month.

Please keep us posted. I know of nothing funner to hunt than Javelina with a bow. I am very sad as this is the first year I was unable to hunt them in 4 years. I really look forward to that hunt. I will be watching your post and living my hunt this year through you so dont let me down.

With that being said my wife is planning on coming down there with me in 2009 to bowhunt them for her first time. I am very excited for that. Keep posting and show us as many pictures as you can. :arrow

My girlfriend could finally make it out for my archery javelina hunt, so we headed out and took this one. It weighed 45 lbs dressed. That's a pretty big javelina, since in my experience dressed weight on them is about 32-34 lbs. My pig last year dressed 49 lbs, though. One of our local hunting forum runs an annual big pig contest. I took 2nd last year with my 49 lb boar, out of 27 bowhunters that entered. So far this year, I'm in first place but there are about 9 days left in the season.

By the way, I reached my goal that I had set of taking my pig this year at less than 6 yards. Two years ago I took mine at 12 yards, then 8 yards last year. Next year....chloroform rag and a knife!!

Way to go Marvin.......sure do feel empty without my annual January trip out there this year. Just too many other trips this season. I'll be there next year for sure. Congrats on an up close adventure.
