StickFlicker's Holiday Javelina Hunt...

If you saw my post of javelina trail cam photos in the trail cam forum, this is the follow-up to when I went to retrieve the memory card.
I had scouted for javelina about a week before January 1, the opening day of the bow season here in AZ. I found a place where the javelina had worn a good trail going through a thick brushy area, but hadn't actually seen the pigs. I placed a trail camera there, in an open grassy area so that I could try to figure out when they were traveling through the area, and to see if there were any big ones. Unfortunately the date and time were set wrong...so...that was of little use (although I guess I could try to calculate it). Anyway, on opening day of the season I went back to collect the memory card. I set down my bow and digital camera and walked across the small opening to retrieve the memory card. When I bent over to get the camera and took out the card, my backpack was hitting the brush, so I took it off and set it down a few yards away. I walked back across the opening to exchange the memory card with the one in my digital camera, since they take the same card. I heard a noise and turned around to see the javelina coming into the clearing, right by where I had set down my pack! I knocked an arrow, but realized my release was in my pack! They were less than 15 yards, but I thought it would be cool to photograph them standing near my pack, which I did. Eventually, they fed away from it and I crawled over and retrieved my release. By then, however, I was having so much fun photographing them, I decided to just set my bow down and just continue to photograph them. They sometimes fed within about 3-4 yards of me, and my bow lying on the ground. I took this photo to show how close they were to my bow and pack (and myself). I thought it was kind of cool. My girlfriend is a rifle hunter, but has never been bowhunting until I've just recently began taking her. I really wanted her to share in my javelina kill this year, and unfortunately she wasn't with me. So, I just decided not to take one that day with the hope that I will get more opportunities later in the season when she is with me... I hope that doesn't cost me!! Marvin :-k

I'll let you know how it goes later this month.
With that being said my wife is planning on coming down there with me in 2009 to bowhunt them for her first time. I am very excited for that. Keep posting and show us as many pictures as you can. :arrow
