Stolen game cam

Last year after my limited entry elk hunt our curiosity got the best of us and we wanted to see what else is lurking in the thick pines this year..
Hoping to catch a glimpse of the monster bulls growing this summer.
I couldn't even express our excitement driving up the road to go check my game cams this afternoon. We set them up on the Wasatch unit last week... In the middle of no where on a packed elk trail.
The total disappointment and anger I had when I came down the trail and the camera was gone.. The only thing left behind was a set of horse tracks..
In the past 8 years I have never had any problems with dishonest people and my game cams until now.
I am literally sick to my stomach and wishing I could have 5 min with the person that stole my cam.. You would have 2 black eyes and wouldn't be able to walk for a week or make it two weeks.. I may be a short fat blue eyes sissy girl but you would have another thing comin..
Why couldn't you of stole the cam that wasn't working for hell sakes.. or at least let me see the pictures before you stole it.. The camera is replaceable but its the fact of not respecting other peoples property is whats gets me riled up..

I know its a long shot but my camera is a black stealth cam with my name and phone number engraved in the back.. Word will get around and if you hear of anyone bragging about it please let me know..
It has to be someone local.. Either in the Tabby, Kamas, Heber area
Id just like to tell them what a scum bag they really are..
Thanks, Carrie

There I said it.. and im not ashamed

Hey at least the rest of the day was somewhat enjoyable
seen cows and calves a cow moose and chased a porcupine which ended in a tumble down the hill.. And got held up under a pine for a while as the thunder storm rolled by..
Couldnt get much better than that tho..

I'm feeling your pain...

Two years ago I packed a ground blind in about 2 miles and 1200 ft up. Set it up and hunted in it all morning. About 11am I had two hunters come into sight, look at me and then leave. I got out of my blind about noon, collapsed my blind, and found a good hiding spot under a thick pine to hide it in and then hiked higher up the mountain. I didn't make it back to my blind until about a week later, walked right up to the tree it should have been under with the GPS but there was nothing there. The only way someone could have know where it was is if they watched me put it there. It disgusted me to think that someone would watch you hide your property and then come and take it. Where's the intergity? Didn't your mama teach you anything?

Just reading your post got my blood boiling, because I've had 2 trailcams stolen. One I had on an elk wallow, and 3 bowhunters found it and decided to steal it? :>/ The couldn't use it with my password in it, so it sat on a shelf for 5 months. Word got around and a friend of a friend got it back for me, including the memory card with the photos of the thieves on it!!! #-o

Sorry to about your Tcam, was looking forward to seeing your pics!

I've always chained my cam to trees, but now I make lighter cables and lock them up. I haven't lost one yet, but I do have a pic of a guy seeing how it was chained to the tree and if he could lift it. ](*,)

Thanks for all your posts. After that night after I posted this I thought about deleating it for maybe I was just whinning and didnt want to complain but it just burns my butt that people cannot respect anyones property. I just dont want it to happen to anyone else
Ive had a few calls from guys saying they had the same happen and gave me some really good pointers on what they do to keep their cams safe. I really appriciated it.
I also had a call yesterday after he seen a add on ksl about a tree cam that was found. It wasnt mine, But if you know of anyone else that is missing one I can give you his number.
That was really nice of him remembering my situtation and tryin to help out Thanks again :thumb Too bad there are not more honest good hearted people out there.

Was just thinking.. Do any of you have pictures of what you use to protect your cams.. It may help protect others out there..

"Tree Killer- was looking forward to seeing your pics! " yea me too! Heres a few from the other cam. its going to be a while before I get my other back up. :>/

One time when I went in to get my camera it was gone also. I was standing there getting mad when I saw it laying in the bottom of the draw about ten yards down from where I had set it. After looking at the pictures it looked like a bull elk got it off the tree and they used it for a game of soccer for a couple of days till I came in and found it. I was impressed that it stood up to their hooves walking on it but it still worked great.

I hope that you camera turns up soon and that the punk that tookit get the proper reward for taking it.

I am sorry to hear about your cam being stolen. When I was stationed in Yuma I had found the one and only small herd of muleys that was in the area. I would always go and scout them out and watch them. One day while I was there I was walking through a stand of trees that had been cut down and found someones cam on a fallen tree. I slid it off the tree and locked it up on a tree right at the trailhead. I left a note with my # on it so the owner could call so I could unlock it for them. I had a few calls from guys trying to get a free cam but they could't prove it was theirs so I left it. Man were they mad!!!! lol Finally the owner called me and put in his password and showed me the pics on it. He gave me $20 for doing it for him and it sure made me feel better knowing the true owner got it back.

Antlersoutwest,
Sorry to hear about the stolen game cam. I had a good friend text me two days ago and someone had taken his game camera too up Big Cottonwod Canyon. That's a total bummer because It's such a rush to place your camera in a good spot and anticipate seeing what pictures it captures. I'd like to have my turn with the low-life jerks who go around taking things that aren't theirs to take. Your welcome to use mine this year because I haven't had a chance to get out and set it up. If I hear anything about a stolen camera I'll be sure to let you know. Anyway, thanks for sharing the other pictures you took while out. It's so lush and beautiful this year out there!

AntlersOutWest - I went up to my spot in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Tuesday to get my camera and it was gone as well. I pretty much screwed up as I put it up without a chain thinking I would be right back the next week and didn't quite make it. I've been sick about it since then. I just emailed the person who found one so we'll see. But thanks a lot for the info.

It really fires me up that so many people have so little integrity!!! How can you just think that because you found it, it's now magically yours? They didn't have the same parents I had that's for sure. I'd have had my neck rung! :>/

Just the way it is,#1 they are expensive and can be sold,#2 its probablly somone that considers the area theirs and wants to run off other hunters, strap a $100 bill to a tree and see how long it sits there, thats about the same as leaving those expansive cams out.Im going to design a cam case that attaches to a tree with claymores, lets see em get that one!

You could so like one of my buddies did here. Get one of those pulse electric fence pannels and run it up a tree. Run bare wires down and around the Cam with two bottle caps inbetween the tree and the cam. Then return and look and laugh at the pictures of people jumping when they touch the cam. lol ok ok so no one really did it but it would be funny to try. Unless you forgot about it...

Care to share those pointers? I went out yesterday with my hunting buddy and we set up two cameras - our first time doing so. While just like everyone else we think nobody will go to our spot, I suspect people may show up in that neck of the woods. Any tips/pointers would be appreciated.

Sorry to hijack this thread with my questions.

Hello neighbor!

I haven’t set up any cams lately. I’ve been waiting to get some bear boxes made first.. Im not taking any more chances.

I would say defiantly spend a little money on a bear box (metal box that your camera fits inside) and paddle lock it to the tree. They also attach their cams to the tree about 20 feet up and pointing downwards. That was people are less likely to see the camera that high up.
I was going to say take the cams down before the weekend because of all the campers and hikers but mine was stolen in the middle of the week. So they are never safe
Also hide you cameras better. Last time I tried to disguise the camera with small pine branches. Tucked inside as far as I could.
Even if you think you’re in the middle of nowhere, there’s always someone out there with the same “secret spot” as you

I buy all my cameras from nativeoutdoors.com They have bear boxes and locking cables. (best prices ive found and good to work with)
Im going to build my own boxes, I can send you a few pictures if you like.

Good luck to you and cant wait to see your pictures!

I'm Laughing out Loud. That would be incredibly funny. Please someone, post your scouting pics of others being shocked for touching your camera. The pics would be just as cool as a 30" buck or a 350+ bull. I like the line about not forgetting about your own booby trap lol

By the way, thats cool that you did the right thing in the first post you have on this thread.

Sorry to hear about you missing cam. I hope you find whoever took it and are able to get it back.

I have toyed with the idea of building my own cams and the idea has crossed my mind to install GPS locators in them for the very purpose of tracking them down if they do get stolen. However that idea fell through after looking at the price tags of some of these locators ($250+). It seems to me that by simply placing an authentic looking sticker on your trailcam warning that the unit is being monitored and tracked via GPS, should be enough to make any would-be thief think twice about removing your trailam. That and using a chain or cable and padlock cant hurt either.

Just a thought - there are USFS regulations involving the use of trail cams as well as tree stands and those regulations are inconsistently enforced. (Depends on the attitude of the ranger in that district.) But in some cases, the "thief" may well be a forest ranger. As I recall, if such equipment is in violation, it legally becomes "litter".

I had no clue! Where can you find out about the regualtions?

Code of Federal Regulations and orders issued by the particular ranger district in which you hunt. I don't use treestands or trail cams, so I haven't kept close tabs on the regs. But I do know of at least one district with a shed full of "abandoned" tree stands and trail cameras.

Here's a good article on treestands - some of the info could easily be applied to trail cams as well:

http://www.backcountry-magazine.com/Bowhunt/Treestands.pdf

Bottom line: If I was going to leave a couple hundred dollars worth of equipment out there, especially long term, I'd check with the district office to see what they have to say about it first. Gotta remember that some districts are very pro-hunter; others not so much. Besides, if you're cool with their regs, who is more likely to recover property stolen on USFS lands?
