Strange find!

I found this strange skull and antlers. Cats tend to kill quite a few deer on the property that I lease for my cattle. The skeleton was next to this skull and I'm pretty sure this was a lion kill. Any idea why the rack would be so deformed? It must have been killed while the buck was still in the velvet.

Are you sure the deer didn't didn't die from old age? I have seen some pictures of some bucks racks that really got funky as they got older. Just a thought.

It might have but I doubt it. The cats in this area really keep the deer in check, especially older bucks because they tend to be by themselves.

I found this buck in a big area of Ponderosa Pines, which has a lot deer. Thus far I have never seen a antelope in this area, plus the base of the rack is not at all like a antelope and is for sure a deer. When I first saw it, I thought maybe it was a strange looking spike bull elk but after a closer look, it's skull was way to small and the skeleton was for sure a deer.
