Killerbee, I agree that in our youth we have all done stupid stuff and that pure youthful ignorance had a lot to do with it. 2 things really bothered me about this particular incident though that lead me to believe that these youths need to be punished HARD.
1) They did it over a two month period. I can handle a kid making a mistake on the "spur of the moment" but the fact that these poachings occured over a stretch of time makes me beleive that it was much more than a spur of the moment thing. These kids got together and planned on doing it (that's the way I read it....I will admit that it does not say that in the article though and I have no proof of such).
2) The MOTHER of one of the kids tried to hid the weapons during the investigation! Talk about an "enabler"! Instead of making sure your son is held responsible for his actions you try to get him off! I think the mother should be charged as an accessory to the crime. I can see where a child with a parent like that can get in trouble...and probably always will. After all, we all generally act/carry ourselves in a manner that is taught to us by our parents. SHAME ON HER!
Just my thoughts...take them for what there worth. You all may disagree but it won't change my thoughts on it.
These kids should have had to serve at least a year of hard time in a lock up facility for their actions! You will never see these kids pay the fine money, it will be on the books and that's it. I have dealt with kids that have a judgement against them for theft and they have owed money for years and don't pay it back.
Revoking hunting privileges???? They didn't do it legal the first time so what makes us think they will the next time?
The penalties for this should be much worse! If these were kids who killed your neighbors pets they would have recieved a stiffer penalty, they would have been committed to a state treatment lockdown facility for what they did, but because it was wildlife it's no big deal.We haven't heard the last of small penalties for poaching, until the punishment gets harsher we will continue to see youth do this.
Talk about letting them just walk away. That's not even a slap on the wrist. Each teen pays a little over $5000 and spends 4 months in jail. Big deal, they will be back at it again as soon as they get out. 4 months in jail (if they end up serving that much time) is in my opinion not enough time to sufficiently teach them a lesson. The only thing they are going to learn from this is that they can do whatever the heck they want and nothing will happen to them. All I'm gonna say is that in some countries a person would lose a limb for a lot less.
I dont think for what they did is harsh enough!
The fines are a bunch of crap! will they really get paid by the teens? Who knows.
Like AGCHAWK said it was not a spur of the moment thing, it was planned and repeated, The only thing that may teach them a lesson is jail time with real criminals and suspend Hunting priveledges for a LONG time!
That is the whole problem with this place today... NOT ENOUGH PUNISHMENT FOR THE CRIMES COMMITTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANY CRIME
