The Birthday Buck

About a month ago I ask my son what he wanted for his birthday when he turned eight on Oct. 27th. He said that he wanted to go deer hunting with me. So all this season I held out for the biggest, baddest buck on the mountain but on Saturday I was planning on shooting the first 4 point I saw. Although I had hopes of taking one of the bigger bucks that I had scouted this year, I was really happy to take this buck with my son and friend Tom there to help out. Tom first spotted this buck, then we kept losing it and refinding it again in the timber for about an hour before it finally came out at about 330 yards and I hit it twice. First, a little too far back, but the second shot a few seconds later killed it instantly. (The sst redeemed itself after failing to stop my elk). The smile on my son's face says it all. We ended up hiking a couple miles in some really steep, brushy stuff, with about 6" of snow, but he never complained at all. What a trooper.
