Tips for northern elk

Anybody got some tips for me. I'm going hunting elk for the first time this weekend, and im going bow hunting. We have a pretty good idea of where they are and we know we gotta get in about an hour befor light to set up, but any other suggestions on how to take a good elk would be great. Thanks alot.

Sounds like you have done some homework......if you beleive you know where they are that is half the battle, it's all about location and placement.

The rut should be to your advantage, so if you position yourself in an area where the elk can be found, I would begin calling them in. A bugle to locate the bulls, a cow call to lure them in.

Best of luck to you.

The rut where I went in Colorado last week is to the point that the big bulls are busy and the satellites are stealing cows and going to little rugged pockets of timber at 8000 to 9000 feet. Usually you can hunt these smaller bulls easier than the main herd. Usually the main herd is on private anyways. Cow calling is best, they are easily intimidated sometimes and will just pack up their cows and move if you challenge them. Good luck and have fun.
