TURKEY EXPERTS

Just a few questions for all you experts!

Does the wind play a factor in setting up? should we set up downwind of them or doesnt it matter?

We have been getting them to talk back to us, but they seem to hang up about 50-60 yards away. we have decoys set up, what else can/should we do?

thanks for your help!

Scent isn't an important factor when hunting turkeys. Their two main denfences are their hearing and their sight. If you know where the turkeys are at when you set up you might want to try a set up like they do for elk. Set the decoys of to your side or even a little bit behind where you are sitting if there is cover to do so and if you have another person there calling have them back behind you also. That way if they hang up at the same distance that they always do you will be in range for a shot. Just don't have the decoys to close to were you are sitting so that you can move more with out being seen.

Good Luck. With this kind of weather blowing in it can make for some hard hunting.

Excellent advice! All I can add to that is to have the caller move away from you as he calls. That gives the impression that the hen is leaving. Sometimes that can get them to come closer.

If you're alone, try turning your head around so you're facing away from the turkeys and cover your mouth when you call. Again, that gives the impression the hen is moving away. That worked for me a few days ago. Two gobblers came running when they thought the hen was leaving!
