Turkey Talkin'

Okay, I wanted some Turkey pics after seeing some of yours.

I have a REALLY FUN morning, these bunch of females where strutting like crazy...but even cooler is all the Talkin' they were doing.

I'd let out a Gobble and all of them would answer at the same time (loud), it was awesome. The whole canyon would echo. I had a blast.

Got more pics to share later...

Enjoy!

9er, these are less than 10 yards.

The Toms wouldn't come close, they headed for the trees up the hill. But yes they where in the area. Probably 700-800 yards from the hens.

these are toms, just young ones . another note is when hunting turkeys they have no smell senses so you dont have to worry about cover scent or wind wich is good cause they have killer eye sight and same with their hearing! i've heard many people say if they could smell they would be the hardest animal to hunt.i might not go quit that far but it would be a much tougher challenge!

Help me out on how to tell they are Toms, I knew they where you. Is it the color what? When do they start growing beards?

well anytime they are in full strut like these ones are no question, hens might poof their feathers a little bit but nothing like this ,plus the real bright red instead of a pail color, and these, called jakes, probably have a real small beard just coverd by the feathers when their strutted up. + these young birds were probably as big or bigger then the biggest hens were, when they get to be 2 yr olds size will really show them off. another way to tell they are just jakes is to look at their fan, theses two have the top 4-6 feathers are longer then the rest in the fan, a mature bird they will have all there fan being the same length so when its fanned it all one even 1/2 circle.
