Not what it once was quality has gone down hill a bit in the last 5 years. It you get some weather it you will see some nice bucks, and some rutting activity. Overall it is a good hunt for a chance at bucks in the 160-180 range with some bigger ones taken occasionally but still is not what it used to be.

Some wilderness in the unit which as a non resident you can not hunt unless your with a guide or a resident guide. A ton of public land. I often wondered if the wilderness produces some big bucks during the late hunt.

Thanks, I have all the time one would need, I am on somewhat of a limited budget, how would I go about lineing up a guide without goin thru an outfitter. A 160 buck doesnt interest me at all It will have to be a 180 or better or I wont come home with a buck. Any help appreciated

my email is mountainman243win@yahoo.com

You can either hire a guide through an outfitter or if you know someone that is a resident they can guide up to 2 non residents per year after they get the the proper paper work from the game and fish. There are very good bucks taken each year in the non wilderness area's of the unit. I just wonder if the the wilderness holds some monsters is all.

let me ask you this, I probly will never draw this tag again and want to make sure I make it count, I am not looking for an average buck I am a sucssesful whitetail hunter of over 40 years, I took a 6x6 bull elk in idaho on a diy over the counter tag on public land. I have ordered maps from blm dot and state forrestry. I was their in 2008 on family vacation and spent some time on the winter range so I atleast have a starting point.I will be there about a week early and stay as long as needed. What do you think my chances are without a guide to harvest a good solid mule deer. And what will be my most needed equipment. Thanks for your help Larry

well I think you have a good chance at a 170-180 class buck, this is being realistic yes 200 inch deer have been killed in this unit, but it may not be how hard your willing to work but more depentent on what is actually around for age class and genetics. Overall the quality has gone down a bit is all.

Call the bioligist and the warden for the area and get their opinions. Second if you are a member of the Huntin Fool magazine I would get a list of the hunters that are members that gave hunted this unit and talk with them too. Perhaps ask not only where and how they hunted but how they would hunt it if they could do it over again.

here is a link to a guy who hunted the unit I think it was 2009
