Utah Deer Drawing

Looking for some help/info. It is that time of year to apply for hunts. I am not sure if I want to put in for a LE tag or just the southern. For LE, I was thinking the Paunsaugunt, but do not know anything of the area. Is there still quality deer there for the rifle season? My second choice would be the Thousand Lakes Unit being that I am familier with Fishlake area. If I got a Southern Tag I am not sure where I would hunt either. I shot a decent 4x4 in 2007 in the high country west of Junction. While hunting cow in 08 in Fishlake I saw a lot of bucks, but that was during the rut. I have heard of good bucks on the Boulder, but am not too familier with that mtn. What are your thoughts?

by the sound of your post (not being familiar with the pauns area etc..) i'd say stick with a general season tag and wait and use any points for an LE area you know you can find a good deer in. Just my .02........

I do not know if I will ever get familier with the Pauns area, I do not live in Utah. I do envy you guys that get to see all the wildlife all year round. I guess I was trying to find out how hard it is to find a good buck in that area?

You can put in for both the hunts and u can only draw one deer tag a year so your chances are better that way. O and u can pick 2 hunt choices for LE and General. So if I was you I would put in for areas that you know best first then you can chose rifle for one smoke pole on the same unit or you can pick 2 different units you get what I am saying.

Chances of you actually drawing a limited entery tag with 0 points is slim to none. So what you do is apply of which ever one you want to, then shoot a buck with your general tag and then scout the limited entry unit.

Right now the Henery Mountains is the best LE unit in the state, with the Pauns coming in second like I said it will probably take 5 or more years to draw either tag, so decide which one you would rather hunt and do some scouting when you get the chance.

With the odds for someone with 0 points for the pauns at about 1 in 500 and for the Henries at about 1 in 3000, I would plan on waiting a lot longer than 5 years. And those are last years odds. Since nonresidents can apply for more than one species now, those odds will drop even lower. Sad, but true.

I already have 2 preference points. Maybe I will get lucky and draw early. It only took me 4yrs to draw a LE Bull Tag.

Yeah well here in Southern Utah where I live i get to see these bucks up on the pauns quite often and love every minute of it but like everyone said you have a very slip chance of drawing it with no points and usually it takes a little while to scope out a decent buck you would like to shoot at for sure it's not just going to be like a one weekend ordeal but take your pic and like JBird said the Henry's are doing pretty well as for what i've seen coming off of their these past few years.

If I was lucky enough to get drawn this year, or if I ever get drawn, I will be up a couple of days before the hunt and I will stay the entire season if I have to for a nice one.
