Utah Elk hunting

I see a lot of Utah hunters on here, so i thought this would be a good place to ask.
Does Utah have any over the counter Rifle Elk tags for Nonres hunters ?.
I am just thinking about a back up plan if i don't draw a MT tag, and i would like to try some place other then CO.

Yes, you can buy a general elk tag for the state and there are some areas that any bull is legal, most areas are spike only.------shooter

Take this for what it's worth, but it's just my opinion. Utah is the worst state in the west when it comes to general season elk hunting unless you have private property to hunt on. If it were me, I would look at Idaho or Wyoming (May have a slight chance at general season).

If you hunt Utah general season elk on public land, and shoot a raghorn, you have been successful on the toughest hunt in the state.

What ID says is the absolute truth. I live here and I choose not to bother with the general elk hunts. I know alot of people who do and they are lucky to kill a spike once every couple of years. Bigger bulls are seldom seen or killed, not that they are not around, but the pressure tends to be be overwhelming. I think that Idaho has some good opportunity if you want to work hard. One of the areas that I hunt for mulies is a general unit for elk and I see some bulls every year. I never buy an elk tag because getting a deer out of there on my back takes me right to my limits. -----shooter

Thanks guys,
i was hopping to find someplace with a over the counter tag that would be better than CO. the pressure there is just NUTS. hopefully i draw a MT. tag and wont have to worry about a back up place to hunt. I just love coming out west for a couple weeks Elk hunting ever year. But at 57 i know i don't have to many more years that i will be able to do it.

If it were me and you didn't want to go to Colorado I would first look at Idaho and possibly Wyoming. It will probably still be difficult to get away from the crowds though. What weapon are you willing to hunt with?

Leave my little rag horns alone lol

I agree tho, Ive been lucky every year on general units but you have to out smart all the other idiots and know where to go.
I do alot of scouting and set up game cams to know the elk and deer live through out the year.
There are quite a few nice general bulls and bucks out there, if you are dedicated enough you will find them.

Colorado by far has the best OTC elk hunts over any state due to shear numbers of elk and oportunity. I'm sure you'd be disappointed going anywhere else.
My suggestion would be to just find a new place to hunt within Colorado :thumb

Even if you do come to Utah just for a General, you should still try to draw on a LE tag, sure its gonna take you a few years... ok awhile, but still, Utah does have some great spots on those LE's to kill a very nice elk!

Remember the new world record was killed here . ??? :not-worthy :not-worthy Not sure were it came from, but it was killed here . LOL Look at the record bulls taken , and you will see a bunch taken here in Utah . That must tell you something !! I had a heck of a time finding a spike this last season , saw plenty of big bulls . ](*,) A friend here in Hyde park killed a very very nice bull in Logan canyon on a LE hunt . If you get a LE tag the chance of you getting a nice bull are really good . I see some very nice bull every year . :thumb

I agree with you Rab about LE tags being outstanding. There's no doubt about that, but my remarks were in regard to general seaon tags offered over the counter. They do not hold a candle to the LE tags wich can take a decade and a half to draw.------shooter
