Wasatch Expo archery elk tag

I was luckly enough to draw out a expo tag for the wasatch elk hunt. The problem is I have never really spent much time time in the area. Plus, I am new to archery hunting.(never even shot a compound bow). G has taken care of me down at Utah Archery, can not say enough good things for them and Hoytt. I am not looking for any ones honey hole but just a starting point. Any one care to point a blind guy in a direction. I have even thought about a guide? what have the experiences been in the Wasatch unit? Any help would be appreciated. That goes towards set up with gear as well.

Thanks

First thing I would do if I got that tag would be to give Jim Hiatt at wholelottabull a call.
Book my hunt and let the fun begin.

I emailed Jim and we will see what he can do. I have talked to a couple local guides and was not impressed with what they had to say. I think most are set up for the rifle hunts. The odds one gave me were about 30 percent filling a tag, and thats using his service. I think I would keep my 3 grand and take a month off work. Thanks for the lead.

I would say the 30% is probably not to far off of DIY archery hunts. The wasatch is an awsome place and there are alot of elk, but there are not alot of giants, there are a few but they are few and far between, I would not pass on a 320+ bull especialy with a bow. As for starting points your popular starting points are the sheepcreek / hoble creek and Strawberry valley areas.

The problem you will have is that there are alot of archery deer and spike hunters that will be hunting the unit as the same time you will, and I mean alot.

If you have the money for the guide I would definatly talk to Jim Hiatt, I don't think there is anyone that nows the wasatch as well as him, he definatly knows his stuff. Bigest thing is to enjoy the ride.
