Wasatch Front Extended

I sure hope that hunters in other states have better luck than us Utahns. The wasatch extended range gets pounded. High # of hunters, Low # of elk and plenty of steep mountains covered in thick brush. Last weekend I had two elk coming in, two grouse off to my side, and an itchy trigger finger. I held off on the grouse, but marked them on the GPS (hoping they'd stick around) and just as I was about to move, I got busted by an elk coming in to my calls. The second elk was steadily moving towards me, but starting to try to circle. Long story short, never caught up the the 2nd elk and never saw the grouse again.

Finally getting into 'em after years of hard work. Still, they are very call shy and spook easily.

The wasatch is some of the best huntin in the state. You must be on a diff wasatch than the rest of us. The extended can be awesome wait for some snow to move and the temp to drop.

I was able to get into the Elk as well this past weekend and even a few good deer. I was onto a real nice 6pt a rag horn and 5 or 6 spikes. Fun weekend, I wasnt able to connect on any of them but it was a good time. They werent making any noise either.

I'm surprised to hear someone complaining about the Wasatch. I had the opportunity to hunt it for a few days last season. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw deer every time I went out and even saw a couple moose. Here in Colorado, our season is just under a month long and that's it. You have no idea how fortunate you are to have such a honey hole right in your back yard that you can hunt for three months!

I have to agree. Last year during the rut I saw a ton of deer movement every time out.

my second trip out in the extended, about 8 inches of snow out there snowing on and off today. no elk sign whatsoever, however i did see ten moose, yes ten..nothin else, they were out feeding everywhere figured the elk would be too, must not have moved in that area yet...onto a different area tomorrow, those elk have got to be somewhere darn it. i hiked from 715am to 3pm and called it quits.

on the way out i got stuck in the stream/ditch on the side of the road, only 3 wheels on the ground....solid ice i was only going 5mph and there was no way possible to stop..thanks to jason (another hunter driving by) for sticking around while i rocked the truck down into the ditch without rolling it over somehow, and then floored it through the stream/sticks/trees and back onto the road. he would have been my way out of the canyon had it not worked which was a huge relief to have someone there. cant believe i got the truck out thought i was going to have to leave it for sure. hopefully better luck tomorrow,..

oh and i know i mentioned my first hunt in the extended somewhere else, but i saw 2 moose and 6 bucks....just figured on keeping this thread running with my results

So far I have seen at least two big bucks taken from the Wasatch in the last couple of days. Congrats to those hunters that were able to punch their tags . I purchased a deer tag online, the second they were available, and was given a refund after a week. Apparently the tags were sold out from the draw.
I am still searching for that extended season elk.... without luck.

Milesaway, we would all love to see some pics if you have any of those two big bucks. I have my tag and hope to get out a couple times this week.

I went out on Thursday morning with a new hunting buddy and we saw over ten bucks. There were at least 4 four points, 2 three points and a bunch of two points. I watched a two point for over three hours. He was trying so hard to breed this doe, but the four point just wouldn't let it happen... he kept running him off. My buddy decided to make a stalk on the big 4, and when he was within 25 yards, another hunter shot the buck. The other guy was at least 65 yards away with a steep downhill shot, I am surprised he got him. I guess the lucky two point will be back at it! Good luck guys, they are definitely out and active right now. I just have to find my elk now.
Dave.

Milesaway, did you know the other hunter was stalking the same deer? Did he know your buddy was stalking that deer? That is too bad. Sorry to hear that.

We had been watching that particular buck all day. My buddy shot at him earlier in the morning and barely missed. We watched him bed down again, get up and feed, chase some does and bed again. We didn't want to push him out, so we waited for the opportunity to show. About 10-20 minutes after he put his stalk on, I spotted the other hunter. I am not sure if he saw us or not. Oh well, at least someone was successful. It was fun, but I wish I had spotted some elk since I wasn't able to get a deer tag. Big snow storm is about to hit this weekend. I should be out right now but I fear that I would get stuck in my Honda Civic, just like last year. My car was towed from Parleys last winter and the Highway Patrol wouldn't give me a ride home...

I just heard that Anthony Dixon from Full Moon Productions just shot a 6pt bull today. Congrats Anthony! Can't wait to see photos... Get that bull off the mountain before that huge storm hits!
