Wasatch Front extended archery area

I was wanting to hunt the Wasatch Front extended archery area in Utah for deer, but I have no idea where to go or where to get access. Has anyone hunted this area that could help?

Thats no kidding. If you dont like to hike this is not the hunt for you. Also need to be able to shoot longer distances. I have never been able to score on a nice one on the front but they are there.

I like to hunt the Front, the reason why is that you really have to be in shape and work to get to areas where there are big deer and this seems to thin out hunters. The terrain for the most part is steep and rugged, but it's close enough to make a morning hunt out of it, although your legs may ache when you get home. That said, it's just something you have to explore, people who hunt the Front seem to have little honey holes that they have found through putting in the work. In my opinion it's definitely worth it especially because you can hit it during the rut, which I haven't experience myself yet but hear it's something to behold. Get on Google Earth and check out some trails, but most importantly get in the gym!

Good luck. :thumb

Agreed, you will have to be able to hike no doubt about that.
But disagree on shooting longer distances. I personally don’t think you need shoot any further than 30 yards to collect a buck. It doesn’t hurt to be able to hit something further but the further you push the envelope the greater the risks of missing or worse wounding and crippling.

I have killed 6 deer in 6 years on the front with an average distance of 19.16 yards so you don’t need to be proficient at the long shot. Just like in golf it comes down to how good you can putt. When you can get close your percentages will go up on scoring. You however need to be able to hit what you are aiming at. So I can’t stress it enough Practice, practice, practice.

30 yards on a 20" 4x4
18 yards on a 27" 6x5
20 yards on a 17" 3x3
22 yards on a 24" 5x4
5 yards on a 28.5" 5x4
20 yards on a 28" 6x7

Good luck on the front this year. Hope you all kill a deer. :)

If you don’t tag a buck don’t forget you can take a doe starting Dec 1 and going to Dec 15. The front does need to have doe's taken out. It also needs cow elk taken out so if a shot is presented. Take it! It will help keep the deer/elk numbers down. This is one weapon the rifle guys are going to start using to get their trigger fingers on the front.

You can hunt elk till the end of December includes bulls or cows

I just want to correct what seems to be a mistake. I am no expert, and these rules are confusing, but I think you can take a doe or a buck at any time on the Front, until December, at which point it when it becomes doe-only. I got this from the 2008 proclamation:
"In the Wasatch Front and Uintah Basin extended archery areas, you may use archery equipment to take a deer of either sex from September 13–November 30. From December 1–December 15, only antlerless deer may be taken."

That is correct. You can shoot a doe anytime during the extended season.

you guys are correct i was typing fast and didnt read my post before posting. What I ment to say is dont forget to take a doe if you dont kill a buck.

so my doe hunt begins on dec 1 and goes to dec 15 because I wont take a doe until then. good luck!

swbuckmaster------- Hey i was wondering if you could tell me the best area to hunt on the front? I am from Santaquin and dont have a clue where to go. Is any of this country accessible by four wheeler?

nope. Just lace up the boots.

It’s all good. Pick a canyon any canyon and you could find a big buck. They get chased from canyon to canyon. So the bucks are hard to pattern. Don’t waste your time looking from your truck. Just lace up your boots and hit the hills. You won’t kill anything from your truck.

good luck
