When I returned in Feb of 2006 it took 3 days of flying due to lay-overs and the sheer amount of miles I had to travel just to reach the East coast. Once I hit the states in Norfolk VA I found out that I had missed my connecting flight to Las Vegas NV and had to sleep on the floor of the airport in Norfolk overnight until I could catch another flight to Las Vegas. Once in Las Vegas a severe storm grounded all flights and I was told that I would have to spend another full day there until I could catch a flight to San Jose CA and then another to Spokane WA were I would finally see my family.
Well, after 15 months in theatre I was pretty upset about the delays in getting home and proceeded to take it out on a poor airline employee (I regret that to this day). After the employee scurried away with his tail between his legs I put my combat pack down in a corner, sat down on it, and began to sulk about my flight issues. Not 5 minutes later an older woman walked over to me and asked if I was returning from the Middle East. I looked up at her and told her that I was, thinking that she may be looking for someone inparticular. When I said "yes" she bent over, gave me a big hug, patted me on the back and said "Thank you VERY much" and then walked back to her husband. You would not believe the effect that that one kind gesture had on my mood! I actually got a bit teary eyed when I realized that my problems were nothing compared to the folks that were still in theatre. Man I was selfish!
After I sat there for another 15 minutes or so I got up knowing darn well I had something I needed to correct. I promptly hunted down the employee I had torn into a short time before that, said I'm very sorry for what I had done, and then went back to my corner...thankful that I was stateside again.

I sure wish I could tell that woman THANKS in return!

I met some returning service members at Denver airport a few weeks ago that had just come thru Dallas, I got to tell ya I had tears in my eye's as a young Army Sgt told me the story of what happen in Dallas. I tried to buy him a beer but he was in uniform so lunch and a coke was the best I could do.
I have a nephew in Iraq now and he is due back in Sep. He's from back east so I'm taken him on his 1st elk hunt when he gets back.
I have never been so happy as to see the change in how this country treats our returning Vets.
