Both of the calibers you mentioned are good western calibers. I personally use a .300 Win. Mag for all of my Big Game.

If I were to purchase a new rifle, I'd look at the .300 Win Short Mag. or possibly a 270 Win. Short Mag. The 7MM is hard to beat but the reason I went with the .300 is the flexibility of different bullet weights.

Good to have you here and I'm looking forward to your future posts.

I shoot a new 300 win mag with swaroskvi scope, but I shot my first elk with a 7mm 08 at 480 yds and knocked it dead with one shot. 130 grain bullet, killer gun for deer also.

I use a 308 for elk and of course it makes a great deer cartridge as well. If I were buying a new rifle, I'd probably go 300wsm. Maybe a Savage/Stevens 200 in 300 win mag since you can buy one for $300 out the door.

the short mags are nice but i would go the other direction there is not a great selection for them and the difference between the wsm and the regular calibers is slight. i would get a 7mm rem mag now instead of the 7mmwsm its so hard to find bullets
the 270 is great and so is the 7mm.

I shoot a remington 300 ultra mag, 150 Swift Scirocco Bonded for deer and 180 Core-Lokt Ultra - Power Level III for elk. love the gun for speed, power and distance.

killerbee
300 weatherby for it all!! i load swift sirrocos 150's for deer and Swift A-Frames 165's for anything else. the 165 A-Frames did a heack of a # on my moose in AK a couple yrs ago.

Personally i'm with killerbee....300wby all the way, "rack 'em & stack 'em long range".
But....you mentioned the 7MM.
There are several 7MM's out there. If you are looking for something that will really perform well and "better than average" but still want a 7MM, take a serious look at the 7MM Ultra Mag. It is the hottest 7 out there, even surpasses the 7STW, and literally leaves the regular 7MM Remington Mag or Weatherby Mag in the dust! It will be plenty for both elk & deer! Chances are (and just like my 300WBY) it will do things beyond what you'll ever ask of it.
Hope that helps...and good luck with whatever you decide! :thumb

Shhhh! :-$ What ever you don't don't let Nonya see that quote!

Silly mossback didn't you know the little old 7-08 can't kill elk past 100 yds!

Guess someone forgot to tell the elk that. (???)

I shoot both a 7mm mag and a 300 WSM. Both are great guns. If you use factory loads then it will be easier to find ammo and cheaper to shoot the 7mm. If you reload it shouldn't make that big of a difference. I use 180 grain nosler partitions and acubonds in the 300 and 160 grain nosler partitions in the 7mm.

Great cartridge! One word, Partitions!!! IMO the 7mm with the 160 partition is the same as a -06 with a 180 gr partition. And that's a good thing!! .284's Rule!

Personally I shoot a Remington model 700 .270 that is probably older than I am, but i cant think of a gun I'd rather shoot. Shoots flat and straight and takes down both deer and elk. But then again it's the only hunting rifle i've ever owned so I have a biased opinion. I have been deer hunting with guys shooting larger caliber rifles and presonally I like to have some meat left for the freezer.

I have everthything from 243 to 338 and a few lever rifles in 30 and 40 calibers but my favorite is just a remington 700 SS in .270 I reload for this exclusively with Hornadys.

but my 7mm mag and 300 win are also great riflees that I also use often
