What did I see crossing the road??

Hey guys, I was down just south of hatch, ut a few weeks ago and I saw 4 birds crossing the road and I was wondering you guys could help me out with what I saw. They had very similar in coloration and shape to a hen pheasant, at least that's what they reminded me of. But they were larger than a pheasant, at least larger than the ones I've seen/shot. They also did not look like turkeys that I've seen in the past. When I got closer trying to get a better look they spooked and flew 40-50 yards away. Anyways, if you have some idea as to what I saw it'd be awesome if you could let me know!
