Kade, for years I used my trusty .270 which was pass down from my father to me. However, a few years ago my lovely wife bought me a new 30.06 and I've used that ever since.

My son uses a .243 and my brother uses a .270 or .308.

Winchester Model 70 7mm Rem Mag. also use Browning composit hunter in .243 WSSM but have not taken an animal with the short mag yet.

I prefer the good ole 270 also.

But 30.06 is a great gun also, and 243 and others. But some are a bit to powerful in my opinion.

Right now my favorite is my Win Mod 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55 w/22" barrel and 1-4x Redfield. I've come back to it again, the 6.5x55. In the past it's been a number of things. Next year this may change. My favorite is determined not by the cartridge but by the rifle itself. That in turn is determined by the country I'm hunting. My featherweight is a compromise of light weight to carry around, handy enough to move well, enough barrel to swing well but short enough to work well in somewhat tighter cover, a scope that gives me lot's of light in dim light, lot's of field of view for tight shooting and sufficent power for shooting at game farther than I do, without hurting the handling quality of the rifle much. It's chambered in a cartridge that's shoots good bullets in weights that work well for Antelope to Moose. That have sufficient velocity and remaining energy for 300yd shots on deer (which I don't do much of), and bullet's that have sufficient velocity and penetrating qualities for game much larger than deer, farther away than they are normally shot. I would be just as well served with the rifle in a number of other cartridges but I like 6.5's and 7mm's.

I like the '06, mainly because it is heavy enough for elk or moose and can be loaded down for the varmints. However, I have been considering buying a 7mm-08... I have hunted with the same '06 for 25 years and it has never failed me yet.

Now, because I am a lefty, I prefer the Rem 760 (or 76 or 7600) or the Browning BLRs. They are short enough to swing well without excessive weight and you never have to take your gun off of your shoulder to cycle the action.

I use my .300 Win Mag for all big game. On the smaller game, like antelope and deer, I try my best not to hit the shoulder.

And I thought I was one of very few people who used the trusty .270. Most people I see out these days shoot what we politely refer to as "cannons". I load my .270 with 130 grain bullets for deer and elk. Some say it's too small for an elk, but all it takes is a well placed shot to the heart or lungs. More sport in my opinion.

Ruger M77 in .270 - I use the Hornady Light Mag. loads in 140 grn. and have taken 7 deer and 3 cow elk - all one shot kills. Check out the ballistics on the Hornady Light Mags - you'll be impressed.

Those old .270's are a great weapon. The oldtime writer, Jack O'Connor and my "adopted" grandpa Ernie, loved that caliber and those two knew their stuff.

I use a model 70 chambered for 270WSM. Great shooting cartridge.

I've tried a few calibers and have settled on the 270 win 130 grain in Federal premium ballistic tip for all game.

Remington 6mm semi auto. I bought 20 years ago It was my first and so far only gun. I love the gun but because it was my first I thought I had to have a semi auto. Now after several years and hunts my only regret is that it is a semi auto. Too damn easy to be trigger happy. :222

I see a lot of .270s on here. I shoot a .280, myself, and couldn't be happier. It has enough power to take down anything up to an elk, and all in all is just a sweet gun. Just a hair more pop than the .270. I wouldn't trade it in for anything. Got a Leupold Vari-X III scope, works great.

7mm is what i use. But the best gun is what you are comfortable shooting. shoot placement is more important than size of the gun.

first few deer i shot was with a win. 270
I now use a 7mm

Thing I like about a 7mm is that it is big enough for elk as well.

I must be one of what some would consider a "cannon" shooter. When I hunt with my rifle, I love the ballistics and preformance of my 300 win mag. I have a 270 WSM that I bought for "my wife" and I like the performance of it as well.

Since I could start hunting, 5 years ago I have used my Ruger Mark II 7mm Mag for almost every kill, very flat shooting and plenty of power for anything in north america. I used a .50 cal. muzzle loader on a cow elk also. I just bought a Marlin .450 leveraction which i'm looking forward to using. With the lever-action i'm gonna keep it all 'traditional', with open sights and the whole bit. Those 300gr. bullets pack a pretty big wallop though :))

Levergun450, welcome to MuleyMadness!!! Thompson Falls, ay? Beautiful area to live. I've been through there many times in my life. I have a lot of family in W MT and have spent more time throughout the region than I can remember.

Enjoy the site and I look forward to your future posts.

I was given a remington model 600 in 6mm remington on my 10th birthday. it seems tha day I was born in 1967 my grandfather went and bought that gun just for me. it sat in the cosmoline and a box for 10 years untouched until my 10th b-day. that was 1977. I have owned this gun since then, 30 years, and have taken 28 of my beloved MULE DEER, and 2 coues deer, 18 javelinas, a corsican ram, and 4 antelope. I only ever shoot the factory remington ammo. it is the 100 grain pointed soft point core lokt, or the 100 gr pspcl. I love this gun. the day my son turned 10 in september 2002 I handed him an exact duplicate remington model 600 in 6mm for him to cherish. although I could not go buy a new one back in 1992 when he was born, I could look online and find a good one for him. I ended up buying one from a gun shop in washington state, that guy had 5 of these hard to find hunting guns on hand. so hopefully the two of us will continue to harvest our animals with these same rifles for many years to come ! good luck !
