What rifle do you use for deer hunting?

What rifle do you use for deer hunting and why?

I use a 30.06 that was handed down through the family.
I will try to post as many options as possible, just list yours if it's not there.

a3dhunter, I answered "30.06" becuase that is the one I use most often. However, I used my old trusty .270 for YEARS that was passed down to me from my father. However, my wonderful wife bought me the .06 a couple years ago and I've used it ever since.
The above is relative to my Mulie hunting. I also hunt Whitetail in N ID every year and I USUALLY take out the .243 for that hunt.

althoug i have a ton of different guns, any more i use my 300. wby. for most everything. i've had a lot done to it and it shoot like a dream. i shoot 165 gr swift sirroccos for deer. yes it' s a bit over kill but it does the trick. COURSE ALL OF THIS IS ANLY WHEN I RARELY HUNT WITH A RIFLE, 95% OF THE TIME IT'S MY BOW! :arrow :arrow :arrow

AGCHAWK, sounds like you got a good one, a wife that is! Anytime a wife will buy her husband another rifle she must be a keeper! :)

LOL...thanks 3d! I think I'll keep her!

As a matter of fact, I THINK she's gettin' me a new Glock .45 for my upcoming B-day! We went to the local gun shop the other day and she was VERY interested in whether or not I liked the side-arm, how it felt, etc.

Gotta love her!

You missed my timber rifle, .32 Win Special. Primary is a Rem 700 .270 for both deer and elk, backup Win Mod 70 pre-64 .270. Taken elk and deer with both, but only deer with the .32. Still waiting to get my first elk with it.

I took a lot of deer with a .308, but had been wanting a flatter shooting rifle. Got a good deal on a 7mm from a buddy, so picked that up last summer. Used it last season on my buck and will probably be using it here on out unless in thick timber or brush, or archery hunting.

I have a large stable full of all sorts of great calibers and cartridges but my go to rifle for deer anyway has been my 270WSM. It just shoots like a dream and handles very nice. I have it topped off with a Ziess 4.5X14X44 Conquest. My favorite loading is 130 grain sitting on top of reloader 22 powder. I have been shooting swift sciroccos but have recently been shooting Nosler Accubonds. The sciroccos have worked great I just wanted to try the accubonds.

The last few years I have hunted both deer and elk with my Winchester 7mm mag. It has been a great rifle for me. This year my dad handed down a 300 WSM to me. That will be my elk rifle from here on out. I haven't decided whether to use it for deer or not as I have really enjoyed my 7mm and am very comfortable with it. I also like the idea of not having to site one gun in for separate loads for deer and elk.

I use my 300wby for all my hunting, yes even on an occasional jack rabbit just too keep me in tune. Evertime i point that gun at anything no matter how big, it just tips over, i love it!!
I have two of these, but the one i use hunting is a Mark V "Alaskan". It looks like the accumark, only the Alaskan is nickel intead of stainless.
It's topped with a Leupold VXIII 50MM scope with B&C "stairstep" reticles and a Harris bipod.

dahlmer,
I hunt 3rd rifle season in Colorado because you can hunt both elk and deer at the same time, thus I only use one round. Used to shoot Rem extended range 140gr until the quit making them. Switched to Win Fail Safe 140gr, now they aren't making them either. I've still got a couple boxes but soon enough I'll have to find another load.

And for those who don't think a .270 140gr bullet can do the job, look up Jack Conners. At least, I believe that's his name, or some variation of Conner.

Shoot a Ruger 270 and why? Probably more a family tradition or because of my Dad. But heck, that is a great reason to me.

But I actually think a 270 is a great deer gun. Shoots straight, accurate and far IMO. One of the best!

Yes Abert, his name is Jack O'connor, he was a huge fan of the .270.
I am actually more of a fan of Elmer Keith, he told ole Jack "the .270 would make a good coyote gun". (Elmer was a fan of big calibers.)
But my all time favorite writer and gun enthusiast is and always will be Roy Weatherby....he liked the "shock factor" of an ultra fast moving bullet....hence, the Weatherby Magnums were born. =D>

I started out with a .270 Win. in a Rem model 700 BDL but have since changed to Roy Weatherbys favorite.... .257 WBY Mag

I wish I knew how many deer I've taken with a 270, I know I've taken at least 9 elk with one.
I've taken big gam with a 375 H&H down to a 22-250 but I still keep hunting most of the time with the 270 win. I bought a new tikka T-3 in a 270 wsm and love it . so I guess you could say I've moved up some but it's still a 270.

I love the ballistics on that .270 WSM, great western round.

RooDog
I used the .308 last year so it's time to use the 7mag this year. Another good deer round is the .25-06.
13
Heads or Tails
Use my ol' .300 Win Mag for just about everything, and use a 270 WSM for a back-up most of the time. Just picked up a .325 WSM for larger game.

Don't think I'll get to go this year unless I go to the valley after blacktails. Anyway if I was going, it would be my 6.5x55 win featherweight. Bullet is kinda up in the air as it shoot's 129 and 140gr Hornady's very well.

Hey Don,

I love that 6.5 X55 Swede cartridge especially with the 140 grainers. It is an awesome highly under used round at least here in the U.S.

Let's add another option - .280. I use a .280 Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle. I mainly use it cause my dad got me started on it, but I like it because it carries it bit more power than the .270 and doesn't add hardly anything in recoil. Doubles as a good elk gun as well.

I started out with the Win. 30-30, then moved to the Savage 30-06 but it did not fit me well, it would kick the crap out of me. Now I shoot a weatherby mark 5 7mm mag. and it doesn't kick much at all.
13
badgersniper
my old standby was the 30-06. but my new favorite is the 300wsm. I shoot it in a winchester featherweight with a leupold vari x III and a barnes triple shock 130grains. I have found with a little trigger work and having it bedded it is truly a bonified 500 yard take a dirt nap deer slayer. Not to mention this combo is very proficient in laying elk to rest.

7mm weatherby ultra light with custom aftermarket kevlar stock, mounted with a leupold scope.

I know guys that hunt super thick brush, in thickets and downed trees so they use 180 grain partitions in 300 win, to bust through twigs to make clean kills. But it pays off cus they have 3 30" bucks and 4 or 5 bucks that are over 23". Still hunting is all they do.

The only deer I've ever killed was with a .50 cal blackpowder rifle.

But if I had my dithers, I would use my Browning BAR II chambered for .243 Winchester.

i started off as a kid with a 7mm, but now use a 30/06
13
Wapiti
I use a 300 win mag. i liked the feel of it when i first picked it up in the store and it was about the only left handed bolt action they had in stock.

gotta love the .270 I use this the most but also use the 300wm and the

:222 30-06 sometimes the 7mag or the 7mm STW

I shoot a Browning 270 lever action...

1- it's what my daddy shoots! :not-worthy so I grew up using his and I've tried other guns and this one just feels right to me!

2- it's hard to find a gun for left handed people! (even though that's the only thing I lefty!)http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z134/lifetimedeerhunter/emoticons/icon_hunter.gif" alt="" />

3- plus it's good when your one of your hunting partners use the same gun.. in case you leave your extra bullets at camp #-o
