I turned my boss onto my favorite hunting spot for archery elk (somewhere on the Manti) he and a friend went down for the opening and my boss smacks a cow opening morning and he is now hooked on archery!! :thumb
But Sunday as they were getting out of there stands they encountered another fellow bowhunter, he informs my friend that he and his three boys are camped just down from them and that he had just arrowed two cows and as he was waiting for the 20-30min to go by, out walks a spike he comes to full draw and decided to pass because he "already shot 2 cows" between him and his boys they have 4 tags to fill.
PS: They did not find the cows!
Do we tolerate this and turn our heads, or do we step up to the plate and turn him in?
My Friend let him walk. But me personally I would have called the DWR, and set a good example for his three son what not to do.

I can't stand to hunt on the same mountain as these types of people...get serious or go back to rifles!
Turn the guy in!!
Call or no call? Tough call. :) If you did call I doubt the DWR would have done much in a situation like this?
How long did they search for these two cows before they started hunting again? Unfortunately i think too many hunters in this situation would do the same thing and give up. First few days of the hunt then it's "no big deal" if they lose the animal because they still have the rest of the season left. First off know how to shoot and be able to make a well placed shot, and then if you do botch a shot do everything in your power to find the wounded animal(s). I remember a thread on here last year where a hunter lost the blood trail and was actually going to go get a friend and his dogs to help track a wounded elk.
Honestly i think states should require "refresher" courses for hunters, just like taking the test to renew your drivers license.
To pick up on this story.... I went down to this area to hunt this weekend hoping this guy would still be there.... he was a no show. But after only 20min in the trees Saturday morning I located the first cow, pulled the camera out and wouldn't you know it dead battery...crap!! Got to my water hole set up for a long set....nothing showed up so I took a little walk and it did not take 15min and I found the other one, along with a big old stinking bear!! That bear stunk more than that week old elk did!! What a waste of meat and life!!!
That would be a FEW YEARS BACK.. This guy walked, no one turned him in :>/
What a great example for his boys! This is why some hunters shouldnt be allowed to hunt and probably not be a parent. Too many kids these days already have no respect for the laws!! ](*,)
Why would you just tell him off? Why not turn him in? What kind of example is that?
In NV, hunting with someone else's tag is a misdemeanor. If you kill the animal, it becomes a felony.
Turn them in. Respect the law.
Okay, I went back and re-read the initial post.
I guess I missed the part where he didnt find the cows and I guess I was a little confused as to the point. My bad.
If someone was poaching, then HELL yes I would turn them in. If it was a friend with his boys and they were filling tags, then I would make a point to address to him how wrong this practice was and how bad of a rap he gives hunters and teaching future hunters the wrong thing to do.
I am just one to address the issue straight with a person. I am very outspoken that way, this is why I said I would tell him off. Telling him off in my terms means to make a point to address my feelings on his practice. I would not try to do this in front of his kids. I am a mother of two and do try to handle things adult like.
However, I do find it disturbing that this guy would down two cows and then not try and locate them. The first rule is to find the game! Hell we have lost a lot of deer but it was not because we didnt try and find them...we even search for signs from the magpies and vultures. We still tag our kill and do not try for more.
So, my apologies for not completly comprehending the initial post, but poaching is wrong and I dont tolerate outright poaching.
My thoughts....I wouldn't hesitate for a second to turn him in. I'm in the same boat as AVS Man, I would turn my own mother in if I caught her doing something like this. I have turned in poachers in the past and will do so any time I think someone is purposely violating the law. What makes this even worse is that this guy wasn't killin' the cows to fill his freezer...he was just killin' em for the sake of killin' em. IMO, that is the WORSE kind of poacher out there!
These sorts of folk really get my blood boiling (I am sitting at my desk right now and can feel my blood pressure rising). They deserve everything they have coming to them and then some. I think it would teach his two boys a valuable lesson also to watch thier father get arrested for being an idiot.
