Whats a good Varmint Gun???

Well I wrote a big long post on this earlier today (or so I thought) but come to check up on it and can't find it so here it goes again, hopefully I don't screw this one up too [-o< .

Basically just looking for a real fun gun to shoot. I kinda have in my head that some of these small game guns have lots of accessories you can get for them (not sure what they would be or even if its true, just something i made up and started to believe i guess, haha - as you can see i know nothing about small game guns).

I'll be mostly use it messin around with some rabbits but will also use it for coyotes every once in a while. I'm also gonna do a little pdog shootin with it when i have the time so i'd like something thats pretty accuarate at longer shots. I dunno, overal just want a fun gun to shoot. Not sure where to start looking. anyone got any advice for me? Or personale views? or any input at all for that matter??

well do ya plan on eatin the rabbits. a good all around gun would half to be either a 223 or 22-250 but if you are planning on eating the rabbits get a full metal jacket for those and always take head shots so ya dont ruin the meat :thumb

a 22-250 or a 17hmr, or 17 centerfire.

The funnest gun, hands down, to shoot is a good ol' .22. Great for small game but too small for 'yotes. Cheap ammo, accurate, and fun factor can't be beat. The best, as far as accessories, would be the Ruger 10/22. If your looking for something to knock down bigger critters and can reach waaaaaaaaaay out there, the .22-250 or .220 Swift are hard to beat.

Sounds like 22-250 is what I want to go with...

You say the Ruger 10/22 gots the best for acesories - what kind of accessories are there out there for guns? (You thought i was kidding when I said I know nothing, didn't ya :) )

22-250s are great but a little spendy on ammo unless you reload. the 223 is just slighty slower (4000 fps vs 3300-3800 fps) depending on the ammo you buy but is plenty for what you want it for and the ammo is about as cheap as you can get for what you are looking for. i shot a jack rabbit from 350 with it yesterday with ease. however if you are going to eat the rabbits it may tear them up a bit much so a 22 or 22 mag or 17 m2 or 17 hmr would be good and you can shoot a yote with a 22 mag or 17 hmr as long as there within 150 yards. other good centerfires for yotes if you dont care about price of ammo would be 204 ruger, 220 swift, 222 rem, 218. o and a 243 is great also but will be a lot on rabbits . you could buy an ar 15 (223) and there is endless accesories for it im sure you know but its one of the military issue type guns. they can be extemley accurate but are spendy for all accesories.
and if you want a regular bolt action in a 223 i would suggest the savage i think its the model 110 or the 10 i cant remeber but its pretty cheap price for awesome quality , and most people underrate it . but the only thing it lacks in quality is the wood they use for the stock. and they did that on purpose to cut costs for the average joe like me. but everything else is awseome and savage are known for there exceptional accuarcy. i paid 400 $ for mine and i can group under 1/2 inch groups, and it has no mods done to it.

you can probably go to google and type in ruger 10/22 accessories for that but it woouldnt be the best gun for yotes from very far out

AR 15's are pretty accurate you say?

I doubt I could get one of those from any random sporting goods store could I (cabelas, Sportsmans, etc..?) So where would I get an AR 15?

I'll bet that would be a real fun gun for just 'dinkin around' type stuff and i would imagine there are tons of accessories for em.

anyone on here ever had one? How'd you like it? any dis-likes?

well i dont have one but i dis like the prices. ar-15's are pretty expensive. the cheapest i seen them is 850$ and they go up to thousands of dollars

YIKES!!

maybe a reg. .223 is a better option then.

Would you guys say as far as the cheapest gun (not cheapest quality, the highest quality for the cheapest price type of thing if that makes any sense?) but the "cheapest" gun with the "cheapest" ammo would be the .223?

I own a Savage model 10 in .223 that i use on varmints. I paid $400 for the gun, and i shoot HSM 55 grain PSPs that i pick up for $11.99 for a box of 50.

I know some folks don't like Savages, but it's more accurate than my Weatherby and Remington. But i must say that my Savage is a pre-accutrigger and has a Timney trigger installed in it which was $99. So basically the gun was $500.

yeah savages are awsome they are dead accurate. yeah most places have ar 15s ithink cabelas has them the sprtsmans in st george has them so im sure most of the others would too i bought my from ace hardware. i paid just under a thousand for mine but its fun. you can find them for like 6 hundred for the off brand ones but they are still good. mine is a bushmaster so it was a bit more and if you were so buy a colt it would be even more. and there are tons of mods for ar s but they are spendy so i just shoot mine un modded

I really like my Savage .204 Ruger. They are fun to shoot with no recoil and minimal noise. I haven't done much with it as far as loading goes but some of my friends have and they are making 300+ yard kills on squirrels and such.

I personally like the 220 swift in a Ruger No. 1. This gun is extremely accurate right out of the box. Ammo can be spendy but reloading will definately get you even more accuracy. Some say it is a barrel burner, but having the No. 1 tends to slow down the rapid fire. :222 I affectionately call mine AT&T ( it likes to reach out and touch things) Longest shot ever made was on a yote at 436 steps. If I can figure out how do download pictures I'll try and post it.
