When can i have my buck scored??????

Hey guys i shot a buck this year on the paunsugunt on august 16th with my bow and im certain he will make the pope and young minumum. The horns have been in my freezer since august 20th and i was just curious of when i could have them scored i believe there is a 60 day drying period? Also can i leave the horns in the freezer right up till the day i take them to be scored? Do i need my license to have them scored? Thanks for any help.

In order for them to be eligible for official scoring, they must be taken out of the freezer and allowed to dry at room temperature for 60 consecutive days. If they are velvet antlers, they must be preserved first and then dry for 60 days after they are cured.

I shot a good buck on Deseret, a few years ago. I called the salt lake office Dwr and asked the same question. They told me they would score it for me, so I made an appointment and had my buck scored I got an official paper and it didnt cost me a thing.

Thanks for all your replys and information guys. Also thanks for posting my picture up brett, i cant figure out how to post them on this site. Bohntr i guess you are a official scorer right? If so if my horns werent in the freezer could i have them scored on october 16th since i shot the buck on august 16th even though i dont have the tag with the horns? Also how can you tell if the horns have been out of the freezer and at room temperature for 60 days or 6 days?

I'll try and answer your questions as best I can. Yes, I'm an OM for both P&Y and B&C. If the buck is still in the velvet (I'm assuming so by the photos and being in the freezer), the 60 days would start once it was preserved (injected) and began drying at room temperature....not in a freezer. Theoretically, if the velvet was stripped on August 16th and left in room temperature it could be measured 60 days from that time.

There are a few things to look for on velvet deer that have been in a freezer the whole time, but those I will keep to myself. :-$

That bucks not going to have a problem making P&Y so why would you want to cheat and get the 2-3/8s extra on the score and push your conscience. Heck of a buck congrats.

Hey avsman i am not trying to cheat to get the extra inches the only reason i put it in the freezer was to make sure the velvet preserved after it was injected. I have shot deer in the past that the velvet the started to fall off so i wanted to take all precautions to make sure that didnt happen on this buck since it is my biggest buck to date. I was just curious of how they could tell how long they have been in the freezer and bohntr has told me all he can and i appreciate his information. I have now pulled the horns out of the freezer and started the 60 day drying period in room temperature so i will have my buck scored around christmas time.

Congratulations on taking a very nice buck. As for the score? Ummmm, BIG!!!!
I look forward to hearing what he scores, but in the meantime there are a lot of guys on here that are good at scoring via pictures and enjoy making their head hurt by crunching these numbers. I'm sure they wouldn't mind throwing you some numbers, in fact i think some even enjoy it. It just makes me want to ](*,) every time I try.....
