Where to look

What type of terrain do you look in do you look on trails roads or do you just beat the bush i have never been to lucky on finding sheds when i was younger i used to go get elk sheds but it is 2 hours away and dont know if it is good anymore i have been watching some herds close to the house this winter and have been seeing some decent bucks but im not sure where they will drop if im lucky it will be in my back yard we had a buck two nights ago that i was tempted to go see if i could pull his rack off lol do they rub them off or do they just drop off sorry if these seem like dumb questions but i have no clue on shed hunting and the kids are wanting to find some sheds this year any info is appreciated thanks :)

I'm only 13 but I know that they can fall off if the deer is running and if it is a mature deer that has already lost one antler it will shake its head til the other horn comes off cause its head feels lopsided. They can also fall off while they just are walking around. They will sometimes be rubbing a tree when they fall off. They can also fall off while the deer is bedded. My dad and I usually walk around in the sagebrush flats and cedar breaks and we usually find about 5 or 6 horns each time we go out

I'm a novice but from what I understand, if you are seeing bucks this time of year, that is your searching grounds. If you can put them to bed you'll know where to start. A lot will be under the trees where they bed. Others will be in the sage brush bitter brush flats where they feed. Just hike around a lot where you saw the bucks bedding and feeding, and good luck.

1st thing is, go where the deer are, sounds like you got that. Search areas where the deer spend most of the time, that would be the bedding area. Next best is feeding areas. Sheds will be harder to spot in the feeding areas because it's often brushy. Trails are next best especially at fences, roads and openings where a buck will pause.

Waynedevore,
Don't you wish we had the problems as the guys out west, of looking for the areas where the bucks are this time of year....In Northern, MN I hunt sheds by the same rules....bedding..feeding..to and from trails......but usually knowing there was only one or two bucks in each bunch after deer season.....
I concentrate my searches to where our deer were in Dec, Jan & Feb.....Usually fresh logging or natural feed or yarding areas....
I am lucky usually to find one or two sheds in eight full hours of looking.....I envy the guys out west who find 20 or thirty per day.....I have a hunting partner with a cabin in Ontario...before they got real strict up there on taking sheds home he once found 35 whitetail sheds in one day on a field trip to Manitoba.....My best ever day here was 4 or 5.....
Now after reading about the fresh finds...I am even more sick with cabin fever...we still have about 18" of snow on the level and our woodchuck stuck his head out of the rock pile the other day, saw his shadow and declared 8 or 9 weeks of winter for us.....
Good Luck shed hunting guys,
Randy

well for the most part I sounds like you have got some pretty god advice on here and there isn't much more we can tell you except for maybe if you head out looking for horns in a certain area and you actually see deer hat are sill packing their horns you don't really want to push it to hard in hat area or else the deer will find a new area to shake their racks off. Anyways good luck and I hope you have a good season.

Yes, I will stay out of the bedding areas until the bucks have shed and the snow well melted. We have had about 2 ft of snow here and the deer are moving about OK. Very cold Winter here but the deer look good.
Bogboy I've heard of a couple fresh finds in MN. I've looked in some slashings, good sign but no finds. I'm going to spend a week the end of March in W North Dakota and Montana. Hope to collect some bone.

Waynedevore, good luck on your bone hunting adventure ......I probably am going to have to wait till we lose this snow (where is that damn global warming now)....I have taken a few road trips with my wife looking for some new areas for shed collecting and have found some very promissing looking sites with quite a bit of deer sign....But like the rest of you guys are doing I know that this is a tough winter here for the animals and they do not need any extra stress right now....
Later,
Randy
