IF you have it, take the dead heads you find, if they are smaller antlered, take the antlers off and put the sheds on it. That is what we have been doing with ours. They look really good!

Be careful about this. Brian, I know you are already aware of this, but picking up skulls is illegal in a lot of states (I know it is here in Washington, as well as Utah. Not sure whether or not Oregon has the same rules).

I am in Idaho. If the deer was killed by nature.. ie: winter kill, old age.. then yes, you can take them. If they are hit by a car you cannot. All the ones we find are out in the hills that have died from malnutrition (winter kill). We use them if they are either chalked out really well or small.

Sorry, not taking any orders for skulls yet till i figure some things out.
But you can order some of Mountain Mikes through Cabela's. They look pretty good and are fairly easy from what i'm told.

Yup, you are correct. I was just pointing out that a lot of states will not allow it, regardless of how it died.

Funny, I always wondered how Idaho manages that. I mean, states outlaw it so that folks won't bust a big buck or bull and hide it so that they can go back later and pick up the head or skull, depending on how long they leave it. How does any warden know that a skull you bring back wasn't busted in the "boiler room" or anything like that and allowed to die? More power to ya as far as the Idaho regulations though. (I live right on the Idaho boarder and hunt there every year)

you know i've always thought that it was o.k. to have them if you had a tag for them. meaning, about 6-8 yrs ago i found a big dead bull,330+6x6, the first week of archery season.it had been there for a year, i left it lay, and on the last day of the season i went and hunted the same area. on the hike out that evening i hiked to the skull, notched my tag, and took it. i even had a conversation a couple yrs later with a fish and game biologist who said that was legal. but now when i think about it i should look into it more. cause really, what would keep a person from saveing any un-filed tags and taking a skull home and wrapping a tag on it from 2 yrs ago?? when i did it it was a current tag for a on-going season. so i dont know if that is the difference between legal and non-legal? i would like to ask a fish and game OFFICER instead of a BIOLOGIST. i think the officer might be able to give me a little more info.

I got my information from Fish and Game officer Chris Boseck. Good guy.
I do see the problem of people shooting one and leaving it until sheds start falling. Coyote or rodents might eat it though. Interesting thought. I hadn't thought of it that way. Excellent point! I guess they are hoping folks are honest when they say they found it in the hills dead from winter kill. I found a head one time in the hills that had for sure been cut off by a knife from the neck. I took it to a Fish and Game officer to report it. They made a note of it and let me keep it. It was a huge two point. Around here unfortunatly the Indians go out and shoot a bunch. Most likely was one of their kills and they left the head.

I've found three winter kills so far this year. All young bucks. Unfortunate, they had some great genetics. This Idaho weather is really making it hard. Its 70* then 30* with snow. Should have some nice grass this year for them to get nice and fat on.

Good luck on finding a nice skull for your sheds!
