Who hunts the backcountry?

Who actually hunts the backcountry??

I grew up hunting the backcountry wilderness for elk with my father. He taught me everything he knew about hunting big game with a rifle. Now, not saying it wasnt useful material. Ive just developed a different method of hunting.

So where am i going with this??

I was just curious who actually bivys out into the unknown?? Are there that many guys out there that do this. I feel the only way that i have accompolished my goal is to hike in as far away from any roads to harvest animals. Who else?? Is this normal?? I like to hunt mulies solo, who else?? I think about hunting big mulies everday of my life. Am i crazy?? Like I say, grew up hunting elk, but over the last 4 years have lost passion for hunting the animal. I like to devote my time in the field to big mulies..Are we on the same page??

Im 31 years old and feel like im in my prime, and dont have a single day to waste. What age did you feel in your prime?? Just curious if we all aren't a little muley crazy????

Just curious if anyone else have given up something to hunt mulies, and how its working out??

I've wanted to hunt the backcountry for elk, but I just don't have any friends that are 1) Willing, or 2) In shape.

I workout like crazy before a hunt and always feel like heading 5 miles from camp, but nobody else is willing to make that sacrifice.

I'm with you in spirit, brother! :thumb

I understand where your coming from, its hard to find a hunting partner to meet the needs. Thats why its easy for me to head back into the backcountry solo. I dont have to please, disapoint, or worry about someone else. Just a thought..

Heck, I haven't even hit my prime yet and I'm 43! As for hunting solo, I won't do that. Something as simple as a twisted ankle could become life threatening very quickly. I do love the back country though!

backpacking in bivy style is 95% the only way i hunt. i do it every year and probably make 4-5 trips 4 day average during are month long bow season i do mainly hunt elk just cause the places i go are by far more elk areas, but i do plan on changing this starting next year to devoting at least 1 of my pack in's to a muley hunt! it's a blast and i do 50% of them solo and 50% of the time someone wants to go try it out. it's hard to find a dedicated partner, everyone says they want to go but come crunch time you dont get many takers. but i really dont care much i love it solo as much or more! you can JUST HUNT! no worries nothing just hunting. and as far as getting hurt.......... you can always crawl out :)) :))

We ( My dad and I and a buddy) hunt the back country for elk every year, 15 miles in on horses. We won't hunt alone, especialy after my knife accident last year with my dads bull.

I have not hunted for mulies way back in yet but would love to.

I think we all understand where you are coming from.

The further in the better. I do have a wife that 'll go as far as I will and then some. :) So, they aren't solo trips. We hunt for elk in a nearby widerness, I could care less about mulies. Use horses some too. Very gratifying type of hunting, and 99% of the public doesn't want to work that hard.

Thats cool to see your wife hunt with you. Your right though, the general hunting population doesn't want to put in the effort to harvest an animal like this. Thats fine it leaves more open for those who do. We can't all hunt the backcountry. I truly believe its 80% a mental thing. Most everyone is capable physically, but the mental thing is not there for them. Just a thought...
