Wild Boar Hunting

Does anyone have any expirience hunting wild pigs? I have been reading about it lately, and it sounds like fun! And it would allow me to hunt anytime of the year!!! I live in northern Illinois and have read of some wild pigs in southern Wisconsin. There is no limit or anything on them and all I would need is a small game licence... and there is no limit!
I would be interested in hunting on a ranch/preserve, if I can find a good place! Any leads??

I used to hunt them when I was stationed in central California. They are fun to hunt and it sure helps bridge the gap between deer seasons.

Sorry though, never hunted in your neck of woods so I can't help ya there.

GOOD LUCK though!

Can't help you where you're at, but if you do find a place, word of advice. Pass on boars. Can't eat them. Well, you can, but you'll choke down every bite. Go for sows or the younguns. Best pork I've ever had was a 45 lb wild hog. Just a baby but the meat is sooooooooooo good you'll never buy pork chops at the local butcher again!

I grew up hunting them in Central California when my Dad was stationed at Vandenberg AFB. The were lots of fun and darned good eating. I believe ethey were a mix of ferel hogs and wild stock that were brought in in the 1920's or 1930's at least thats what I think I remember..
They seemed to be fairly tough critters to kill. We shot most of them with shoguns loaded with slugs wow that brings back lots and lots of memories..

I've arrowed A LOT of hogs over the years. They are one of my favorite animals to bowhunt, as the are very condusive to spot & stalk. They have incredible noses, good hearing, but poor eye-sight. If you get the wind right, you can sneak up fairly close to ensure proper arrow placement.

Big boars are very tough & can be mean critters at times. I've been charged several times. Whether you're shooting arrows or bullets, you want to make sure you get behind the boars armor sheath which covers it's shoulder area. It is VERY durable and protects the boar during confrontations with other boars.

Big boars taste like.....BIG BOARS! If you want tablefare, I would shoot a young boar or dry sow. Usually those hogs weighing less than 120 pounds are the best tablefare, IMO.

i would love to try it sometime. when you eat them do they taste anything like a farm raised hog. or are theycompletly different.

AGCHAWK
DeadI, IMO they taste much different. For one thing, they are MUCH leaner than farm raised pork.

Like BOHNTR and ABert stated, the smaller ones are much better eating too. The larger ones are generally too tough to chew to enjoy.

Plus, because the are so lean, you have to be careful when cookin' em. If ya overcook em you might as well be chewin' on your old hunting boots.

However, I loved em!!!!

Always wanted to do this. The closest i've gotten is that place here in utah but those things aren't really wild and it's not really "hunting". Still had a blast and the meat was Incredible!! Even for a 300 lb. er they tasted real nice! (I believe they were said to be some kind of Feral Pig/Russian Boar mix or something like that, not positive on that and i surely dont know my pigs but they were big and tasty at the same time.

Anyways, Anyone got any info. on places they would recommend for just some couple days (maybe a week if I had - I dunno how long guided hog hunts normally run) for some inexpensive archery hog huntin?

were did you do it here in utah, i did not now we had hogs here.

It's in Corinne, UT (Up by Brigham City). I went last winter just cause I thought it'd be fun and it'd be somethin to do and it'd be a good way for me to harvest my first animal with a bow (had been on 1 or 2 hunts before this with my bow but never fired an arrow).

It's by NO means a hard hunt at all - you go up for a day and you will find a hog that's big enough that you want to shoot. I forgot how many acres the property is but it's got quite a bit of land up there! You walk into it and walk along the river beds and all over the property lookin for pigs/hogs and it really is a blast. I've never been a fan of private ranch hunts or whatever but with this I decided that if you don't have the attitiude that its some serious hunt and you dont try to present it that way, that if you jsut go up there wanting to have some fun and do a little shooting in the off season and have some great meat afterwards too then this is a great hunt. He has all kinda of sheep, corsican rams, hogs, etc.... and lots and lots of property and with the right attitiude it is a blast, in my opinion. I have talked to some people (not a lot, most people either htink its awesome or dont have an opinion) but i have found one or two people who are disguisted with the place, its such a canned hunt they say, etc... whatever - to each their own. The way I see it go try and pay under $0.75 per pound of delicious pork at the store! Cause they charge you $350.00 per. animal you want to shoot. and most hogs are around 350-400 lbs.

The guys name is Todd Yates i'm pretty sure. I seem to have lost all my contact info. on the place but if anyones at all interested it'd be no trouble at all and would take no time to make 1 or 2 phone calls and figure out everything on the place and get you any info. you needed.

Again, this is not a real hardcore full on hunting experience. For beginner hunters or people who want to kill time in the off season or someone who wants to go have some fun with their kid that's what this hunt is for. I had a blast and am accualy planning to go up next year cause im out of bacon, breakfast sausage, and pork chops!! (best bacon, sausage, and chops ive had in my life by the way!)

Just thought i'd report on the day. And first off, sorry Dead-I, I would have invited you but been both busy and .. well .. lazy :) So I havent been keeping up with all the posts on this site quite as often lately. And to think, we had extra lunches too!! Anyways - Just barely got back from the SCI youth hunt up in Corinne, Utah (just west of Brigham City). At our Utah Chapter banquet a couple months ago we drew 5 youth hunters to go on a fully paid "hunt" up in Corinne for all kinds of hogs, sheep, and goats. They get to look over all the different animals and pass some up and decide which one they want throughout the day. Many of the kids were first time hunters which made it pretty fun, the youngest boy was 7 - it took him a little more try but all things considered he did great, had a blast, and ended up with a great trophy sheep.

More later with some pics... Just remembered the Salt Lake Bee's are back in town tonight!!! WOHOO!!! Watch out Tacoma!

Will post pics later tonight :)

Was out scoutin' a little bit while the group was taking pictures and hanging out gutting the first pig of the day. Stopped off for a pee and just in time too, these guys started feedin outa the bushes right where I would have been walking :)

They made pig hunting here illegal last year. There were some wild/feral populations that were getting out of control and there was an open season and no limit for them. Well, then people started transporting and stocking them and the state said NO.

Now we have state pig snipers in the sky. They fly around the problem areas and kill all they find fifty sixty or more in a day.

I never tried it but always wanted to. Guess I'll have to go elsewhere to try it out.

we hunt lots of pigs in TX. Hunting them with dogs is my prefered method. The bow hunters really like them too.
