Would you take this shot?

If you had to shoot 100 yards free hand with a rifle. Would you take this shot? Or how close would you need to be to take a shot like this?

With him laying in that position? No
I'd settle my crosshairs on him and wait him out. As soon as he stands up....Boom! :thumb
Now if you want the definition of a PIG muley....that buck would qualify in my opinion. Ridgetop...Great photo.

bigbuck92
not if he was laying down. like Hiker said id wait until he standed up then shoot
21
killerbee
it looks as if he's busted you so it would probably be a qwik decision-- but i would at least try to wait till he was up, oh ya 1 more comment thats a freikin pig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :222

AGCHAWK
I would have to agree...wait him out.

HOWEVER..........If I was hikin' all season, beat up, frustrated from the lack of shooter bucks, cold, tired, hungry, it's the last day of the season, and THEN "BAM", I spot that PIG just lyin' there....I MAY just take the shot...LOL

In other words, I guess I'd have to be put into that situation....PLEASE, PUT ME IN THAT SITUATION!

YES :thumb

What if the buck is standing right there and he only needs to back up while turning around to run back to the left. Then you would not have a chance to wait him out or get off a quick shot. Then what?
21
MuleyMadness
Is the buck laying down? I think he is already standing up ready to "bolt",
not sure if I'd take the shot or not. But a strong maybe depending on the circumstances.

He is to big to let run away without shooting at some point.

waynedevore
Yes, This is why.

It's only a 100 yards, and a still shot. A good size kill area.

You don't have much time, he's going to go. One or two jumps and he'll be in the ravine and out of sight.

Chances are this is the only shot you will get. He's a smart old boy, and he's off to a safe place where knows he won't be found.
21
huntenfever
would have to say yes if that is the only opportunity i had.
21
HUNTIN FOR LIFE
Deffinetly Yes 100 yards is not that far even if it is free hand.
So i Say I would shoot. :222 :222 :222

I'd have to say I'd pass. If he did bolt, mulies have a tendancy to run off a couple or three hundred yards and turn around to see if the danger is still there. I'd get to the top of the ridge and hope for a better, although longer, shot that I could at least go down on a knee a shoot.

Honestly, I think it depends on how comfortable you are with your rifle and you shooting ability. I don't think I'd shot at him standing, but i"d put the cross hairs on him, just below the jaw and a little to the left of center, then I'd try to slowly kneel down, and if I stood great, but if he let me kneel, He'd be a dead buck!!!!!!!!!!

Big bucks in this country dont stop and give you another shot, they run flat out and use the terrain to hide as they escape, thats how they get big.

i say watch , wait , see what the big buck is going to do and be ready for a shot if the buck gives you one .

kadejones2
yes i would

No I would wait for a clear shot. I would rather eat tag soup than risk wounding a great buck like this and never recover him. Yes I am serious. I let a really, really nice buck walk last season because he was 10 yards out of my comfortable bow range.

NONYA
NICE BUCK?thats a 210" deer! :1

call me a bad hunter, but 100 yards, standing! i would probaly take the shot, unless there was one with him that was bigger.

That buck isn't going to give you a second chance. That buck is about the smartest creature living on this planet...shoot him dead while you have the chance or all you'll have is a big buck story that noone will believe he was that big...what a hawg!!!

Based on the photo, NO I would not take that shot. I would wait for him to stand.

I would take the neck shot...I am quite confident at 100 yards plus a miss is unlikely to wound him...and that is the buck of a lifetime...
21
NONYA
I think he is standing
21
waynedevore
He IS standing, Muley bucks do NOT bed down in places like that. At least not that I've seen. :-k
21
Hiker
He very well may be standing, good call. From what I can see, you have 2 possible kill shots on that buck, the brain and the neck. When I say neck, neck shots are only successful if you hit them in the neck vertabraes or juglar veins but of you hit the other parts of the neck, you wound him. IMHO, that is a very small kill zone and you better be a great shot, like Ridgetop says...offhand or you have a wounded buck on your hands. I would much rather pass this shot, then wound it and lose it. IMO, You leave a buck like this wounded and it will haunt you for many, many years.

Well, thanks for your responses. I actually had this same view of a 300+ bull this last year but he was only 50 yards away. I did not take the shot, mainly because I had just hiked up a steep hill and was out of breath and really not sure how still I could keep the cross hairs on his throat. I had about 20 seconds to decide and then he was gone. I am always wondering if I made the right decision. Oh well, there's always next year.

I WULD WAIT AND SAY WAIT AND SEE IF THERE ISANY OTHER ANIMALLS BY HIM THEN JUST MAYBE

I had a similar thing happen in the 03 season. I had a opportunity at a Muley giving me about the same shot. He was a good buck about a 25". I chose not to shoot. One thing it was the first day of the season and I didn't want my season to end so early. And I had been climbing and short of breath. I thought I would get a better chance, never happened. Do I regret not shooting? Nope not a bit. :thumb

UH YES!!! that neck will look pretty big at 100 yards through a 9x scope. i would shoot without even thinking about thinking about it! do you think a buck like that, that has you pegged, is just gonna get up and stand there?
21
HighLander
If he was standing yes....not while he is laying down.
21
79Ford
I have to say I wouldn't think twice about that shot. The way I see it I can see just enough of his neck and shoulders to get a well placed shot. And yes that neck will look huge through my scope as well. :222 :222

Id put it right on his neck and CABOOM but then again im really comfortable with my rifle.

With a rifle I think that I would shoot because I know that I would probably get another quick shot if I missed. With a Muzzleloader, I would wait.

Hey huntenfever, any word on that video yet?

Thanks

Most definitely buddy you'd either hit or miss, all lethal target zone I would say.

Well, he's got me pegged. If he's layin down, I'm waitin for about a second til he stands up and then I'm gonna sit him back down. If he's standing, I'd wait and hit him as he goes up the hill. No sense missing or wounding a bruiser like that!

Fortunately we have the opportunity to study the picture, unlike the man taking the picture. It appears to me he is laying down, and that he will have a minimum of 20 yards to go after standing before he is out of sight.

I ease to my knee and wait.

as soon as he stood up that is a magnificient deer where was that us are good ole canada

but that is the perfect neck shot

I would probably have to take that shot, especially if I was within 200 yards. That buck is going to bolt very quickly! The "neck shot" can be a very lethal shot. After the first shot, I would quickly get ready to follow up with a 2nd.
21
DeadI
I would wait for a minute, see what happened. I feel comfortable with the shot as shown, but I would wait to see if a better shot was offered.
