Wyoming area 102

The Wy draw applying is in and I just wonder if anyone has ever hunted area 102 . I've been applying for the area for the last 5 years and I've never been in it. (I did hunt arae 100 elk a couple years back, great hunt). I know it is a hard draw and a LE unit but is it worth it? Next year (if not drawn this year) I'm thinking of looking at some other areas in Wy. I'd like a nice buck of course, but I'd love to be hunting also. Just wondering if it's worth the wait or should I look for a LE with better chance of hunting.

I have not hunted 102, but from all I know, it is not worth the wait. There are a few big bucks in there, but it is a tough hunt to find a monster. I personally avoid those limited quota deer areas near Rock Springs. I had a license in 101 once and I'll never go back. It gets absolutely hammered. It was not a quality hunt. I'd just hunt the regions and get away form people. Good hunting.

icmdeer, thanks for thr info from 101. I know when i hunted 100 for elk the road traffic was crazy. I wished there were no roads around. I hope I don't get the tag this year and I'll do some reserch for a better hunt. Thanks.

I have hunted both area's 101 and 102 for Deer over the past few seasons. When you ask the question is it worth the wait.. You have to understand what you are asking is it worth the wait to just be able to go out on opening day with out ever stepping a foot into the area prior to openning day and putting down a giant probably not, but it is possible to do that. If you put in your time scouting and locate the deer you can find a great deer. People kill multiple 190 plus deer out of that unit every year. When I hunted it during Archery season I found at least 2 bucks over 190 and about a dozen that would go 170 plus. They do get scarce come rifle season, but I had an oppurtunuty at a 180 class deer. If you want to hunt hard you will get a qaulity deer. MONSTER DEER ARE ALWAYS HARD TO FIND! As far as 101 is concerned a unit that large with only 60 tags can't get hammered to hard, you just have to hunt really hard to locate them, but people take good 170 plus deer out of there every year. If you go to this website http://www.wytrucks.com/monsterbucks/standings.cfm you can scroll through the last few years of the contest and this will show you the quality of deer these two areas can produce. Hunting big mule deer is not easy no matter where you are these units are no different. You have to be realistic in what you expectations are I ended up taking a nice 165 buck home from 102,but had oppurtunities at bigger deer and missed with my bow and my gun on a 170 and a 180 class deer.

I have hunted 102 for Deer and Elk. I drew 102 this year and I have waited 10 years and yes, it is going to be worth the wait. This area has many quality 170-180 bucks and sometimes a larger one. My son found some sheds in 2011 while elk hunting and they scored 218!! Double 5 inch brow guards and a 8 inch drop on the left side. I hope to find him this year.
I drew this unit and my son drew Colo 21 so I will be hunting a lot alone. If anyone drew 102 and is looking for somebody to hunt with I might be interested.
